Smoking policy

In case NCL is reading..... now that I know, the main reason I will probably not book another NCL is that so many smokers are their customers. This is good information, sorry NCL. I was considering the Jade or Celebrity Sapphire for the summer. Guess it will be X. Sorry NCL for your policies. THis makes so much sense why my adjoining cabin cruisers on the gem were smoking in their cabin, even though it was not allowed and why I was surrounded by smokers on many balconies. Thanks for posting. As I said, good information.

In case NCL is reading the only reason I will not book X is because of their smoking policy. ;) 42 NCL cruises and counting not someone you want to lose.

Ditto, but it's going to take me a while to catch up on the # of cruises. But I'll sure give it a good shot ;) :D

Smoked for 30 years, have now been without cigarettes for 13 years. Yes I am one of those people that do not like the smell of smoke.

Here is what I do not understand. When I did smoke I was always trying to not intrude in a non smokers space. Maybe this was important because I was about the only one in my family that smoked.

I realize we all have a right to our personal space but I do not understand what has happened to courtesy. One person we cruise with is a smoker but I swear you would not know it.

Please remember we all have habits but that does not mean it is always your right to impose on another person! Please let courtesy be your guide. Do unto others as you would want done unto you!

Each to their own. We have sailed almost exclusively with NCL until now but we decided to try 'X' this time around because of their tighter smoking policy. I fully appreciate the right of smokers to use designated areas, including balconies on NCL, however it can and has impacted considerably on the use of our balconies in the past. We were aware of the policy re smoking on balconies and had hoped this would not impact out enjoyment of our balcony over much. Well, it has, on more than one cruise too. I can't change NCL's policy, so I have changed , albeit reluctently, my cruise line. In addition, I can see more smokers gravitating towards NCL, Carnival, HAL etc, because of the more stringent policies regarding smoking on some other lines, such as 'X' etc, so those lines who have a more liberal smoking policy, based on my own experience, will become less attractive to non smokers like myself. Sounds like the ideal solution to me, everybody's happy, almost as good as 'Smoking' and 'Non smoking' cruise lines. At the end of the day the mighty $ will ultimately dictate cruise line smoking policies in the future, as it has in the recent past, and over time, I feel smokers will be even more marginalised when it comes to cruising, than at present. Just a humble opinion folks....

What smokers either fail to understand or just don't care about is; the smoke clings to your hair, cloths, and body. Your presence in close quarters is offensive. For that reason, I place smokers in the same category as those who fart in elevators.

The difference being the smoker is easily identified. As for the other, EVERYONE using the elevator is suspect! :D

However, those who drink a lot also smell, even without opening their mouths.

Elevators just make it more offensive.

Hey, it's true! LOL

Especially when they beer burp in the elevator, like when you are on your way to dinner at Cagney's. When women do it, it's all the more "alluring" and harkens back to the one carnival cruise I took.

I agree it is offensive to some people. Just as certain foods that emit from some peoples skin pores after eating garlic or certain foods are, just as perfumes, colognes, after shaves, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, deoderants are, just as beer smell from people are.

To each there own as what may be offensive to some and not to others. I guess if it bothers you that much, you could always take the stairs, that way you wouldn't have to worry about being offended.

As I said further up in this thread, NCL's smoking policy is a big reason for me to keep sailing with them - also the great service and friendly atmosphere.

We do need to sail together and discuss all of these major issues such as maple syrup, & crispy bacon over a few pints and a good smoke!:D

Jade out of Venice 12 July 2014 is our next one (I'm guessing you won't be on the Getaway out of Southampton on Tuesday!:D)

Topsiders bar (smoking side) just after boarding or Martini bar/cigar lounge in the evenings - I'm easy to find!

From your username I'm guessing you were Navy - I can put a British Army perspective on things.

On the Sun next week......don't know if I will make it on the Jade....never know. But if we do make it ....save me a seat! Are you sure we aren't related....because that sounds like my exact itinerary! We have 5 sea days on the Sun......which according to my calculations mean 5 martini tastings!:D

Cheers!

We (DW and me) don't call our trivia team 'the Martini Monsters' for nothing you know! We always do the Martini tastings - same formula for itineraries - x sea days = x Martini tastings:D

Christmas 2012 on the Jade, the Martini bar staff started calling the cigar lounge 'Steve's Office' - I guess that is notoriety?

I have a better idea; I take the elevator and they take the stairs. That way their full "bouquet" can be enjoyed by the multitudes. I agree that some pour on the perfumes, colognes, aftershaves etc. and smell like a "fallen paris lady" and I place those along with the smokers and elevator farters. Apparently a significant number feel, "to stink is to be human." I lived through the 60's when the stench of patchouli to me was the ultimate form of birth control. You say "to each their own" but if I wanted to give my nostrils an olfactory full frontal assault, I'd do a south African hunting trip and revel in the aroma of third world living OR I'd eat some french cheese.

Easy solution for smokers: use only an e-cigarette while onboard. That way, you can get your "fix" and nobody will be offended, or even notice what you're doing. You can even "smoke" in your cabin with one and no one will be the wiser.

Easy solution for non-smokers: avoid those who smoke real cigars and cigarettes, and appreciate the e-cig crowd.

Simple. Arguments avoided and world peace will be achieved. If only the 2 sides could just get along. This issue has been around for 20 years in the industry (or more)---I'm not surprised we are still arguing about it 20 years later. But with the invention of the e-cig, this should now be a non-issue.

I last I checked (nearly a year ago on the Dawn) it wasn't MAPLE syrup but some alien concoction posing as faux syrup. Those maples BLED for our indulgence and to substitute their sacrifice for some faux abomination is blasphemous. Locally we have an award winning syrup producer whose product I purchase buy the half gallon in the fall and yes, there is a difference in flavors in real maple syrup. Now as to a "good smoke", I agree. I savor a good cigar (CAO Black) etc. and I religiously shower and gargle if I expect any "matrimonial benefits" after indulging. Regarding the bacon, most people are so indoctrinated by mass marketing advertising that they never really know what REAL dry smoked bacon even tastes like. To me, it's like comparing pressed ham roll to dry smoked Spanish or Italian ham in it's various forms. Or, sorta like bargain brand bread from the "Bargain Store" .

.ie. "aged" to fresh hand kneaded bread from the oven. Some can't tell the difference and that delineates their life experience.

Smoking an e-cigarette is like drinking o'douls

Just for the record.....in case NCL is reading... the main reason we still cruise with NCL is because their policy allows for smoking on the balcony.

I also book a lot of smoking clients on NCL when HAL or Seabourn is out of their spend wish.

Thank you, NCL, for being reasonable in your decisions on this matter.

Hmmm .. Considering smoking is now a major minority .. The amount of non smoking people that will cruise with NCL because they change their smoking policy will likely far out weigh the smokers who won't sail because they can't kick their habit .... . Sorry Just my thought . Yep I agree smokers should be contained . P&0 Australia is also a cruise line that bans all smoking indoors , including casino and private balconies , with only one area outdoors for smoking . Smokers can inhale their own filty smoke and other smokers around you together ... Win win for both sides :-)
