Rare Coral Posted July 17, 2005 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2005 6 years old is considered an old ship? I was just off the Sun Princess that is 10 years old and she was in great condition. She looked very new inside. Ships go through an extensive dry dock every 2 years or so - I doubt you have to worry. If I remember correctly, she was dry docked in the fall of 2004. sunprincess Posted July 17, 2005 #4 Share Posted July 17, 2005 Wow, 6 years considered an old ship  Perhaps we are being spoiled with all the new ships coming out. IMHO I think Princess does an excellent job keeping up their fleet.

DannyMac Posted July 18, 2005 #6 Share Posted July 18, 2005 Sailed on the Grand 3-12-05, she was in very good condition. I think she had a refit in 03 or 04.

Perhaps the RCI ships get refurbished more often because they don’t get the same level of ongoing maintenance as do the Princess ships. If you’re concerned with going on the ship due to its age – without considering how the cruise line takes care of its hardware – then I agree with Coral…go where you know you’ll be comfortable. Druke I Posted July 18, 2005 #8 Share Posted July 18, 2005 In ship years, 7 is still very young! As noted above, Princess does a very good job maintaining its ships.
houstoncruisers2001 Posted July 18, 2005 #9 Share Posted July 18, 2005 Didn't she get a "make over" before she came to Galveston last winter? I thought she did, but I might be wrong.
spongerob Posted July 18, 2005 #10 Share Posted July 18, 2005 Yes, she did. In response to the OP's question, refurbishing is an ongoing process on Princess ships. We had our cabin carpeting changed during a cruise for example. Our steward informed us of the plans to do this and made sure that we would be out on an excursion when it was done. sema4 Posted July 18, 2005 #11 Share Posted July 18, 2005 I wonder if people staying at fine hotels think that they need refurbishing every few years...Try spending time on a world war 11 destroyer in the 70's...now that's old!!!
gopher's girl Posted July 18, 2005 #12 Share Posted July 18, 2005 That would be funny if I left for the day and came back and the carpet was replaced! Imagine that!
ahracer Posted July 18, 2005 #13 Share Posted July 18, 2005 LOL, very old ship?? I've sailed on ships that were 30 + years old. I was on the Grand last May before she had her refurb in the fall and she was in fine shape. Scott
argosy Posted July 18, 2005 #14 Share Posted July 18, 2005 it was refurbished/dry dock in late Fall of 2004. I was on the Grand in February of 2005, and it looked great and practically brand new.
Scotto97 Posted July 18, 2005 #15 Share Posted July 18, 2005 Again - Princess maintains their ships like new. I was on the Golden in April and it looked fantastic (only a year newer than the Grand)
Captain Rhone Posted July 18, 2005 #16 Share Posted July 18, 2005 Actually the Golden Princess is from 2001 so it is 3 years newer than the Grand Princess...
Blondie77 Posted July 18, 2005 #17 Share Posted July 18, 2005 Just got off the Grand 7/13/05, it was in beautiful shape I would never have guessed it to be that old, it was in excellent shape.
