Typical Cost of Medical Evacuation & Repatriation

I've noticed on insuremytrip.com that policies provide different amounts for medical evacuation, from $50,000 to $400,000 and up.

What is the typical cost of medical evacuation?

Also, I assume repatriation (travel back to US from foreign country) is a separate coverage. Any thoughts on appropriate amount to get for this?

Thank you

Sue

Ill try to provide some help to the best of my ability. You've got a couple of different things going on here.

Medical Evacuation

From a ship?

Usually won't cost you anything. Almost all medical evacuations from a ship are done by a Navy or Coast Guard type of unit. Evacuating people from a ship is very specialized, with lots of training, with very expensive equipment. These evacuations are emergent only and will only take you to the nearest facility that can treat your ailment. If it is going to cost???? $30K - $50K

Medical Evacuation

From a land based hospital back to your home country?

Depnds on your medical condition and how much care you need in flight.

Cost ?? $100K - $300K

Repatriation

When this term is used in travel insurance, they are usually talking about returning a body of someone who has deceased during their vacation. This is usually included at no additional charge with the travel insurance polocies I'm familiar with.

The actual term used is medical repatriation. Evacuation covers the cost of getting you to an appropriate hospital. Reparation covers the cost of getting your from a distant medical facility to your home, another location in the US or US medical facility. It might even include the cost of a medical escort, if necessary.
