time4u2go Posted January 19, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2014 I don't recall seeing anything official about the cause of the Grandeur fire. Does anyone know if the cause was ever determined, and if so, what it was?

Captain on the Explorer on our Dec 29 cruise was asked the same question at the Captains Corner - same answer given - no official word.
LindaO Posted January 20, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 20, 2014 Several agencies are still conducting investigations. US agencies include the The U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). They are joining the flag state and conducting a joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire. SOLAS (The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) is also conducting an independent investigation. None of these agencies have filed a completed report. Usually reports of this nature take 2 or more years to complete. I would not expect any comments until the reports are complete.
Mom.to.2 Posted January 20, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 20, 2014 Not official, but Aquahound hinted the cause was a cigarette. This was in response to someone asking why no smoking on balconies.
oneputt18 Posted January 20, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 20, 2014 Decision to prohibit smoking on balconies was decided prior to Grandeur fire. The possibility of it being a cigarette was it's proximity to where the crew takes smoke breaks not a passenger.
