The UPGRADE fairy does still exist!

Last week I booked an inside guarantee at the casino rate for the Ecstasy on February 3rd. I was assigned E57, inside forward on Empress deck. Not the best cabin but certainly acceptable for what I paid. Just a little while ago I got a call from Carnival asking if I would consider an upgrade to a balcony cabin on Empress deck for FREE. It took me about a nanosecond to accept. Happy birthday to me!!!!!

...WOOHOO! Congrats! We leave this Saturday morning on the Liberty. Took today and tomorrow off to get some stuff around the house and some shopping done. Every time that darn phone rings, I jump to see if the Caller ID says "Carnival!" No luck yet. Boo.

they just called me for my cruise on sunday .. to go from aft to the grand suite for 700 for the 2 of us for a week .. hmmmm but we are b2b and dont really want to move ... darn them !!!!!!

So if you're on a B2B in the same cabin you can leave your stuff in the room? Huh, I would have guessed they would make you pack up and get off, just to get back on and unpack, which of course doesn't make sense which is probably why they would make you do it.

Yes !! that is one of the reasons I was not going to take the offer .. also after reading cruise critic so often I know that Carnivals suite perks are not like some of the other lines... now had this been our Panama Ncl trip I would have jumped at it

Does there seem to be any rhyme or reason to who they call for free upgrades? To me it seems odd to offer a balcony to a person booked interior unless they exhausted a whole list of OV passengers that passed on the opportunity. (And for free, why would they?). My point is, since OV typically pay more for their rooms, doesn't it make sense to offer a free balcony to them and then offer the vacant OV rooms to interior? I've considered that they look at how many cruises you've taken with carnival and are rewarding loyal customers with the calls. I really hope the latter is true as we've been cruising with them for over 10 years and are booked with #11 now and have never been offered a free upgrade. (I have been offered an upsell...)

It's a small group of reps that pick people however they see fit. Military rates that are booked inside seem to get picked more often, which makes sense because those cabins are the ones they'll advertise at rock bottom prices if the ship isn't full.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. I was actually quite surprised that I got a call. This will be my 23rd Carnival cruise and the first time I've ever gotten a call. I've never even gotten an upsell call. I also have two cabins booked for a cruise on the same ship for the beginning of March. Maybe that had something to do with it. All I know is that I'm very happy that this happened.

You would think so, but not true. No rhyme or reason as to how they pick upsell offers that I'm aware of.

Been wondering that myself!!!!! About to go on my 19th cruise with Carnival in a few weeks and have yet to get that long-awaited call from the infamous "upsell fairy"!!!! However, I remain.........optimstic!!!

I think most cruise lines will offer an upgrade if they're not sold out and they can't sell the cabins at a reduced price. We're Diamond almost Diamond Plus with RCCL and booked a Crown Loft Suite on the Oasis for a Jan 2012 sailing. Two days before sailing the ship called and asked if we wanted to upgrade for $1000. I declined. An hour later they called and asked the same question but the price was reduced to $500, again I declined and said maybe I'll get the cabin for free if it's still available. Upon checking in at the port we were told we were upgraded!
