I think it was Newt that inspired this thread, when he said that all of Celebrity's ships were named after cars.

Some are Obvious: Mecury, Infinity, Century. Xpedition (Expedition)

But what about Horizon, Constellation, Galaxy, Summit, Zenith, Millennium?

I decided to research the topic.

Constellation: The 1956 2 door hard top model of the Packard Clipper. Less than 5500 were made.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_(automobile)

Horizon: The Horizon is a subcompact hatchback automobile, designed by the European division of Chrysler from 1977.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Horizon

Galaxy: Well there was the Galaxie The Ford Galaxie was a model of automobile built in the USA by the Ford Motor Company for model years 1959 through 1974.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Galaxie

and also the Galaxy Mini Van: The Ford Galaxy is a seven-seater MPV car made by Volkswagen, but sold by Ford dealers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Galaxy

Summit: The Eagle Summit is a Mitsubishi Mirage Station Wagon with a Eagle Name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Summit

Millennium: This is may favorite a Lamborghini Diablo Millennium Roadster.

Zenith: I couldn't find a car named Zenith, but Zenith did make car radios and Bugatti had a carburetor called the Zenith Lyon and the 52 K1 Zenith.

So there you have it, Cars and Celebrity, Almost every ship named after one, (Car that is)

I brought this up as a joke to Newt however there is a history of this topic going back to when Cruise Critic was exclusively under AOL and not on the internet. Shortly after Century was put in service, a poster named Parnami put out a scathing review of the Century and one of the things he faulted about Celebrity was naming their ships after cars. Obviously at the time, most thought they were named after Celestial Objects. This review and this topic was the subject of literally thousands of posts on the board at the time. It was much easier to figure out the names at the time since when Century came out there were only four ships.

Your right it was you that had made the joke to Newt in the Flip Flop Flap post. I really had to laugh about that one, so I made the joke to my huband and he commented snidely that he hadn't heard of a car named Constellation, so I went online today to prove him wrong.

I have such a laugh about so many of the comments online. I think it is quite fun, just as long as I don't take it too seriously.

I did not see in your post that Celebrity was a make of Chevy, size of the Impala. I don't know years made, but my mother-in-law had one not that many years back.

We just booked our first X cruise, have been on other lines, but the Celebrity board on cc has the best people. As the last poster stated, take it as it was given and everyone enjoys themselves. Anyone ever notice how some boards the comments are stuffy and sometimes RUDE.

On one board I made a comment supporting someone that said the toilets didn't work a lot of the time in port. A "blueribbon cruiser" said it must have been something WE put in there. DAH! If you say anything negative it must be your fault. Well, different people think differently, that is why there are so many cruise lines.

Very astute observation!

Shared a dinnertable earlier this year w/ the former Celebrity exec who named Millenium - He said it was totally a Y2K thing...;) Didnt think to ask him if he drives a large luxury Mazda sedan...

Below is a link to the review by Parnami. I don't agree with him about the ship and I was on it about the same time as he was but he is a great and thoughtful poster. You have to go to the bottom and the tour of the ship to see his comments.

Peugeot's 807 (in current production) comes in a trim package that is called the "Zenith".

DKJ,

Obviously this guy must really work for Carnival or Hal or something like. His review is so scathing that you just can't take it seriously. Or maybe he just hates American cars.

Or Maybe he just had a 1966 Ford Galaxie stuck in his "you know where".

He does have an eye detail though, like the Tampons sold in the atrium. I think if he'd been a woman he actually would have appreciated that. And the Poles in the buffet dinning room. One poster on this board said she actually had one in her room, and that it could be used for an exotic pole dance. He just doesn't see the upside of anything does he?

One of the things I love about CC is the user reviews in the editorial section. We selected Celebrity for our 10 year anniversary cruise two years ago after reading both good and bad reviews. They were very insightful and gave you a feel for the line. When I read a bad review, I ask myself, would that thing bother me? Usually the answer is no, so it helps me make the decision of the cruise is right for me. Its more in the details than the opinion its self.

Also, we Celebrity people do post the most, we just need to be careful not to jump on someone when they have an honest negative opinion.
