OceanDreaming2 Posted February 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 13, 2014 One of the things we found lacking on the Sun was the absence of the navigational channel on TV. You know the one. It shows the distance traveled to the next port, how far you've gone, the time, etc. At our Meet & Greet, the HD Brian Walters said it was a computer program which had crashed and they had to order a new one. He said he'd heard it had arrived and it should be up and running soon. That was day 2 of our 12 day cruise. It never happened. In fact we heard later from another source, that it had not even been ordered yet. Since the cost was supposedly close to $30,000, one has to wonder if it's one of those things NCL feels we could do without. What do you think? Do you like to switch on the channel every now or then or could care less?
roger001 Posted February 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 13, 2014 Yep. Missed it back in November also. We keep it displayed pretty much all day. I do think it is a very nice to have.

Pszaffveauhraunne Posted February 14, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 14, 2014 It sounds silly, but the Navigation Channel is one of my favourite shows!
Love my butler Posted February 14, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 14, 2014 It sounds silly, but the Navigation Channel is one of my favourite shows! Not silly. It's one of the last channels left after all the cutbacks.

deladypilot Posted February 14, 2014 #7 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I too enjoy watching it especially in the mornings when i wake up at 4 am and wonder how much longer til we get into port. It was up and running last summer when we were on her.
JohnIreland Posted February 14, 2014 #8 Share Posted February 14, 2014 It sounds silly, but the Navigation Channel is one of my favourite shows! It's good , but it's no safety channel.
tripgrl Posted February 14, 2014 #9 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I think I would feel disoriented without it. I hope it's back up and running soon.
Karysa Posted February 14, 2014 #10 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I only like it on the way to our furthest port. Once it shows us heading back it makes me sad.
auntierobin Posted February 14, 2014 #11 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I hope that this is only temporary, we love the navigation channel, it's about the only thing we ever have on in our cabin. When we are in the cabin it is always playing. Say it ain't so NCL!!!
DevCruise Posted February 14, 2014 #12 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I never knew NCL had a navigation channel. I saw it once on a Carnival ship and wished NCL had something like it. On the Glory they even had it on a large screen outside the coffee bar area....
jimsig Posted February 14, 2014 #13 Share Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) My parents just got off the Sun yesterday so I asked them about Navagation channel and said they had it on in their cabin. Said it could take a while to load and change info, but it was there. I was hoping it would be when i saw this thread as the wife and I will be on the Sun in June. fergusonvt Posted February 14, 2014 #14 Share Posted February 14, 2014 If it isn't there next year my DH will most certainly miss it. He has enjoyed looking at it occasionally on all the ships we have been on. For myself I don't care how long it is until the next port as long as we get there. pex Posted February 14, 2014 #15 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I'll sell NCL my old iPhone for $10,000. They can cobble together a cheap interface, and save some serious coin. Since the cost was supposedly close to $30,000, one has to wonder if it's one of those things NCL feels we could do without.
CruisinMaterial Posted February 14, 2014 #16 Share Posted February 14, 2014 The navigation channel on the Norwegian Star is in serious need of help. During most of the trip it said we were in the mountains of Costa Rica. I'd love to know how the ship ever got there to begin with!! LOL :D It's a channel I watch and enjoy on the voyages to see where we are and what just might be outside our window. I'm sure people who bring binoculars find the information helpful. Some of the truly interested people bring a GPS device and a map to figure out what land is there. On the Panama Canal transit it would have been nice to see all the information as we had a port side cabin and were seeing land quite a bit during the voyage! It was also awesome the pool temp never once changed by one degree up or down! Those deck hands are quite good at their job! ;)
armwinder Posted February 14, 2014 #17 Share Posted February 14, 2014 We did the North Sea cruise on the Star last October, the nav channel was in bad shape then.
carmie3377 Posted February 14, 2014 #18 Share Posted February 14, 2014 What do you think? Do you like to switch on the channel every now or then or could care less? I hope they have it when we cruise the Sun in late May. DCL use to have it and when we went last March, I really missed it :-( It showed distance from last port, distance to next port, total distance traveled, weather and seas information. I liked taking pics of the screen, lol
NCLbigfan Posted February 14, 2014 #19 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I love that channel and like to video tape it with my hand held camera to give us an idea where we are and how far we've gone. The wife and I like to guess how far we will travel by the end of the trip.
Tricialy Posted February 15, 2014 #20 Share Posted February 15, 2014 We were on the Jewel out if N.O. on 12/29 and noticed it was gone - then partway through the trip it was back. It seemed to come and go. Sometimes the time and information were right and sometimes it wasn't. We really missed it too!

We didn't have a designated navigation channel on the TV. They must've added it on the cruise following our's. On the bright side, we did have new TVs! I wonder if the new TV's maybe were not set up properly to get all the channels they could have and the Navagation ch was left off in your cabin? We're in a midship balcony, what category were you in that had a newer TV? We heard the TV's were old but we watch it only when going to bed. I'll miss the navigation channel though, I hope it is back! Fran Edited February 15, 2014 by Rockapulco too tired to type accurately

Fran The navigation programming is a $30M something investment which (apparently) was supposed to have been ordered and even received for sometime. Looks like they finally got it working. Fran - Good to "see" you too. We were in a BD balcony - about as far aft as you could be while still on the starboard side. I read the TVs were replaced during the last drydock. Enjoy the Sun! rbrugler Posted February 15, 2014 #25 Share Posted February 15, 2014 I just got off the Sun three days ago. The Navigation Channel is now working just fine. It was a new $30,000 program, not $30 million, and had a major glitches. They are all fixed now. The captain explained it at our Meet and Greet.
