Room Service

Thank you.

I would fly with the battery removed from the device. God forbid the pin would come loose going through security or something. You would make the evening news as it really does give off an ear splitting scream. Take along a little screw driver in your checked luggage for putting the battery back in.

They know how many people occupy a cabin.

Someone. Anyone. So it seems you're not alone.

The delivery person would not know how many are booked into the cabin ... but he would know how much food order he is delivering.

Today I ordered a Super Doorstop Alarm for use when I am in the cabin. I will just have to remember to use the "privacy" sign when I want to engage the doorstop. Knowing "they" can get in your cabin even when you engage the deadbolt, really bothers me. I value my privacy and enjoy an afternoon nap. I have had the cabin steward come in when I was napping late in the afternoon.

Mine arrived today from Magellan. It was something my husband thought we should have for travel in general, not just for cruising. It just gives peace of mind.

By "they", I assume you are referring to the crew. Please correct me if I am wrong. However, if you do mean the crew, does "they" include Western officers and entertainers on board?

I think our perception of safety and security is often based on personal experience. Based on mine, I feel safe on a HAL ship surrounded by "them"; far safer than I feel walking across a parking lot in broad daylight in the U.S.

One of the reasons I continue to sail on HAL is the wonderful crew who are so attentive to and protective of solo female passengers. I will continue to sail the line (a family tradition for the female solo cruisers in my family of which I am the third generation) and will order room service whenever I feel like it without any sense of trepidation.

I do realize that others may feel differently about security issues, based on their own personal experience.

Best wishes to all for happy upcoming cruises,

Kate

I didn't make the statement but when I think of "they", I am including everyone---officers, crew and passengers. A cruise ship makeup is just like a small town with all sorts of people. The older you get the more disillusioned you get with people you would expect to be above suspicion.

A few years ago our whole country was shaken to the core when an officer slated to be eventually in command of the whole armed forces, was found to be a serial rapist and murderer. If you don't believe me, google "Russ Williams".

On a local level a very well known and respected city councillor and youth worker is now serving time for molesting children and internet child porn. The city still hasn't recovered as that was very recent.

When you are younger it is easy to trust anyone with a nice friendly attitude but when you are older, you have just seen and heard too much to take everyone at face value.

So again, for me, "they" includes everyone on the ship.

Well put, Sapper. & Yes, I used the privacy sign when I napped and the cabin steward came in. I always do.

I know that the "Privacy" sign is supposed to stop crew in their tracks. I've been told that at least twice by the person who was attempting to get in to do something for me.

One time I rose in the middle of the night to find my toilet filled to the brim with raw sewage. I immediately called the Front Office to ask that someone come RIGHT NOW!!!!!. A little later I got a phone call telling me the plumber could not come in, or even knock on the door, because I had the "Privacy" sign out.

Another time, one afternoon, I just had the sign in the door for no particular reason, when I had a call telling me they had found my lost laundry, but couldn't bring it in as the sign was in the door. Again, they couldn't even knock.

I do love, though, that when you have the sign in the door they can't disturb you with a knock, but it's all right to disturb you with a phone call.
