No dress up

Recommended Posts

Just back from 2 weeks on Freedom, making no judgements and can't tell you what others wore because I don't care. This is what I wore and no one said a single word to me, passengers or RCI employees, for the 4 formal nights I wore polo shirt and dockers, for the smart casual (I didn't even know they had this any more), I wore long pants and a Caribbean shirt, and for the casual nights, I wore dress shorts with a polo or Caribbean shirt. I wore flip flops every night because I don't pack dress shoes on vacation. On the first week we had dinner with 2 other couples, who were not going to come to formal night because the men didn't want to dress up, I told them what I was wearing, they showed up and we had a great time, with good food and drink and no attitudes. :)

If there's one caveat I'll offer up, and this is just a personal observation, the folks who dress in gowns or tuxes that I've sat with at my table have tended to be much more critical of others, and more negative in general. Didn't matter to me how they felt, except I did tend to tune them out of my conversations and kept my interaction with them to a minimum.

Same here. just goes to show that you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

I've encountered a few of these cruise snobs before (even before formal night) and I'll usually find a way to change my table.

Thats the way it SHOULD be!

Wow! Two weeks on Freedom! Im envious!

Ryano it was awesome, so much so that we weren't going to cruise next year because we just bought a place in Arizona and were going to spend time there, but we set up an open booking to go again next year. I find myself ageeing with you quite a lot on these boards, if we're ever cruising the same ship, I'd sure like to buy you a drink and say Hi.

I've been following this thread and trying to keep my mouth shut. All I can say is that I don't dress up on formal night because I'm a snob and feel I'm better than most people. My wife and I dress up because it makes us feel good. Isn't that what vacations are all about? If you want to look like a slob, just to make a point, go ahead. Just don't get on my case! In the immortal words of Forest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that." jbond, Let'sGetWet, let's go to the bar. (We look good!)

I think there is also9 a difference to "dress code" depending on the cruise. I have done quite a few Transatlantic cruises and formal nights were pretty formal - a lot of tuxes and gowns and pretty dressed up most other nights too.

But a 7 night (or shorter) Caribbean cruise then I wouldn't expect to see people in formal dress at all.

However, as a card carrying Brit, I don't think ball caps have any place at the dinner table no matter where you are!!

Then if you go on one of those Caribbean cruises, you're going to be surprised! :)

In general, I believe you're correct about TA cruises being relatively "more formal" though.

And as a card-carrying Yank, I agree with you 110% about the ball caps! :)

Ok -I am on a 7 day Caribbean cruise on the Allure in June - maybe I do need to pack a formal dress then

Make no mistake, if you're meaning a full-length gown, you'll be in the minority, but most certainly won't be the only one either! :) I'd say what you'll see the most of on formal nights in the Caribbean is a short cocktail dress for the ladies.

I'm thinking its a made-up term around here to try to justify the wearing of shorts when the written dress-code at the door prohibits them.

No, contrary to popular belief of the CC fashion police ;) there REALLY is a thing called dress shorts and they are very common in Florida, even in some of the fancy places to eat, and also all over the Caribbean.

I wont argue with you that the ONLY written dress code on RCI does prohibit them from the MDR, at least during dinner anyway. That is true. However, a dress code that is unenforced really is no dress code at all.

RCI does not care anymore. Carnival and even Disney now completely allows shorts in the MDR during dinner. Its only a matter of time before RCI follows suit IMHO. I cant wait to see the bitchin and moanin here when it happens ;)

May have to be in the minority then with my legs! :)

Shorts that look like dress pants with short inseems, not gym shorts or swim suits. Ryano posted a link to look them up, mine looked better than those but I'm guessing thats cause my legs were in em LOL

The new formal wear, coming soon to an RCI ship near you :p Can you imagine the stroke some people around here would have? :D

Thing is, while Im not particularly fond of the color scheme, this outfit looks most stylish than some of the el cheapo suits Ive seen ;)

No doubt the enforcement is uneven at best, but for every story here about someone wearing shorts in the MDR, there's another story about someone being turned away for wearing shorts. So RCI does care, they just care unevenly. ;)

By the way, when I looked up pictures for dress shorts for men, this is primarily what you see - and I don't believe that's at all what the "MDR shorts advocates" here are thinking of re: shorts in the MDR. ;)

While I agree that the color scheme isn't one I'd go for in that picture, I for one would have no problem if they want to wear bermuda shorts with coats & ties! :) After all, in Bermuda in particular, that is formal.

These are almost exactly what I wear, except I have red, blue, and green ones and I don't wear shoes or a jacket with them. And I have to agree that RCI cares unevenly because I have no reason to doubt those that say they have seen people turned away but I have been on a fair number of cruises and a fair number of different type ships, and have worn shorts a lot and have never had a word said to me about it

The one thing RCI is most consistent at is being inconsistent :D;)

Im just joking around in these dress threads. If we are ever on a cruise together, you will see me abiding by the dress suggestions. I usually wear kahkis and a polo shirt for casual nights and a tux for formal night. Im one that really loves dressing up because I dont get to do it much on land. Heck, I even leave at least most of my tux on (sans the jacket) for the rest of night to get my monies worth out of the rental ;)

I just dont really care what others wear. Shorts at dinner dont bother me in the least. Im rather use to it from living in central FL for 17 years. They DO allow them for breakfast and lunch so I dont see what the difference is allowing them on casual nights. I just want people to enjoy their cruise and have a good time. Life is way too short to worry about what others wear IMHO.
