orgutierrez Posted March 3, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 3, 2014 Dear all, I would appreciate if any of you would give me some feedback for the Veendam Voyage of the Vikings sailing from Amsterdam to Boston. I would be cruising with my family, is there a large number of kids onboard, I assume the number of kids will be low. The itinerary looks terrific, in either westbound or eastbound transatlantic. I would like as well if you could give me some info about the following ports and what to do and if taking a shore excursion is worth or not: - Invergordon, Scotland - Lerwick, Shetland Islands - Heimaey, Iceland - Djúpivogur, Iceland - Qaqortoq, Greenland - Prince Christian Sund, Greenland - St. Anthony's, Newfoundland, Canada - St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada - Bar Harbor, Maine, USA. Thank you very much. Looking forward to receive advice from the experts of the boards! Oriol.

G&G Posted March 3, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 3, 2014 Choose the cruise that has a chance to go through Prince Christain Sund. There are no tours in Greenland. If you read current roll card you will find shore excursions.
TraelorMex Posted March 3, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 3, 2014 We did this cruise on Veendam last year (roundtrip Boston). It was very nice! Would do it again..especially if we again got a good price :) Due to weather conditions (and mostly icebergs) the Prince Christain Sund sail thru did not happen. I am told it rarely happens due to ice. Ship has to hold a very close line thru the sound, so any small obstruction makes it a no-go :( Were not many children onboard as I recall, I guess due to the longish nature of it. The ports (all of them) were very nice. Enjoyed visiting these faraway places. Was shocked by the cost of things in Scandanavia (Norway..1 small lunch or fish/chips for $47.00 !!) If you go, enjoy..you'll love it!
RuthC Posted March 3, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 3, 2014 Which itinerary would you choose? - Amsterdam vs Amsterdam - Stavanger vs Invergordon - Bergen vs Lerwick - Torshavn vs Sea Day - Seydisfjordur vs Djúpivogur - Akureyri vs Heimaey - Isafjordur vs Reykjavik - Sea Day vs Reykjavik - Sea Day vs Prins Christian Sund Cruising - Nanortalik vs Qaqortoq - Cartwright vs St. Anthony's - Red Bay vs St. John's - Corner Brook vs Bar Harbor - Boston vs Boston. I've been to most of these ports, some of them several times. I would be happy to go back to any or all of them, and to try the ones I've missed. I will say this about Qaqortoq, there is a museum there (cost was $5 USD when I went) that was worth it at twice the price. There's also some stone carvings on a walkway up a slope by the tender dock. They are easy to miss, but well worth seeing; I stumbled over them by accident. If you can only do one direction of this cruise, and can't decide---flip a coin. You can't miss (although west-bound is easier on the sleep schedule).
