Port Angeles, Washington

Depending on budget, mobility, travel preferences, weather and time - here are some ideas for your day:

1. Rent a car and drive to Olympic National Park headquarters in the town of Port Angeles. Get park info and a map. From there take the scenic drive to Hurricane Ridge. You'll see amazing views of the mountains. Take a picnic lunch.

2. Rent a car and drive to Port Townsend. It's a short drive and a lovely small town with Victorian era buildings and homes and an interesting wooden boat center. Port Townsend also features Fort Worden State Park with good beach walks, old fortress and gun batteries and museums. From downtown Port Townsend you can board a ferry as a walk on passenger (or take your car) to Whidbey Island. A driving tour of Whidbey Island will give you a taste of island living on Puget Sound.

3. If you are in Port Angeles during salmon fishing season you may be able to arrange a half day fishing charter. Port Angeles was a center for timber and fishing on the Olympic Peninsula.

4. A long day's drive for you, but well worth the effort, would be the Hoh Rain Forest, located within the western section of Olympic National Park. It is a large temperate zone rain forest where trees are magnificent and unlike anywhere else in the U.S. There are easy walking and nature trails for all ages and mobility levels.

5. If you choose to stay in Port Angeles, the town is easily walkable. You'll enjoy the small town ambiance, shops and restaurants.

6. The Coho ferry runs between Port Angeles and Victoria. It is easy to take the ferry to Victoria and back to Port Angeles the same day. I would board as a foot passenger. The ferry docks at the inner harbor of Victoria, close to the Fairmont Empress Hotel and the BC Provincial Museum (recommended.)

Lots of options. Enjoy your day in Port Angeles!

How long would it take to drive through Port Townsend to Whidbey Island and back?

I would only do this if 1. you make reservations with washington state ferries for trip there and back

2. you check the tides..call the ferry people as the ferry can be held up by low tides sometimes.

3. willing to take a bit of a risk.

you could do a walk on and take island bus to coupeville..very cute town nearby--eat on the wharf. the buses are free.

I wouldn't do it personally from port angeles. I would go to hurricane ridge or drive up to sol duc hot springs...hike up to the falls, then go soak in hot springs.

or check out forks..and the great little logging museum. or drive down hood canal and eat oysters.

I seems that very few ships stop in Port Angeles.

Have been having a hard time finding out info on what to do or a map.

In port 2pm to 10pm.

Any help would be appreciated!

Head up to Hurricane Ridge, just gorgeous..
