glentally Posted April 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 6, 2014 Taking a three day getaway cruise by myself to gamble and relax. Can I get a table for one since I really don't feel like small talk at dinner? I guess my only other option is the buffet.
springs741 Posted April 6, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 6, 2014 I am sure they can seat you alone at a two top. But, honestly you know how close together those table are don't you? I promise you someone near you will feel sorry for you and strike up a conversation. I am thinking Lido, Steakhouse and/or room service. Enjoy your cruise. Rare Honolulu Blue Posted April 6, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2014 Springs741's post above was true of my experience on the Carnival Valor two weeks ago, when I had My Time Dining, except... I promise you someone near you will feel sorry for you and strike up a conversation. In my three tries in the MDR, none of the other diners tried to converse with me. They were close enough to where I could hear them fairly well. The only thing close to a conversation I had was when the photographer asked to take my picture. And all of that was fine with me. Please don't feel sorry for me; worse yet, please don't TELL me you feel sorry for me. I've had a great life that's getting better all the time. If you have assigned early or late seating, things might be different. You could be given a seat at a table of any size, with anyone. Then it's up to you to consult with the maître 'd to get a new seating arrangement.
GeauxCruise Posted April 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 6, 2014 I'll be cruising solo for the first time on April 14 on the Dream. While I am an avid people person and never meets a stranger, I too am planning to dine alone. I thought I was weird for feeling this way. Thanks for making me feel normal! :D I choose My Time Dining and will ask for a table alone. I do plan to eat in the Steakhouse at least once during the cruise. Again, alone. glentally Posted April 6, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted April 6, 2014 thanks everyone for the comments, I won't feel wierd since my wife and I have totally seperate ideas on how to have fun. I go to concerts frequently by myself and have a great time. I am just going to eat three dinners and leave skipping all the singing and dessert. SkyMaster Posted April 6, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 6, 2014 The lovely Mrs. Jones and I also cruise separately quite often, because we too, have very different ideas on what is fun. I love the music, concerts, shows, and fun in general, and she goes to the casino! When I cruise solo, I always ask for, and get seated at a large table, and 99% of the time it's with other solo cruisers. We all have that in common, and many of them will go ashore together, or the comedy show, or whatever. I can understand, however, that you might want private time, and it seems to me that "your time" dining might work out the best for you. Whatever you do, have a GREAT time aboard! glentally Posted April 6, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted April 6, 2014 What I found out on my first solo cruise was Carnival and I imagine the others offer on a large number of cruises on a single rate. I was expecting to pay for two and was pleasantly suprised I only had to pay for myself!!

"SKY" I am going solo for the first time on Carnival in a few days. When I have gone solo on RCCL and Princess, more than a couple times the Maitre D sat me at a 4-top with a couple. I much prefer to sit at a big table or by myself. I have never been seated at a table with other solos. I like meeting people, but being a third wheel at a couple's table is a bit awkward. ccruisequeen Posted April 6, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 6, 2014 I do Your time just for a chance to eat by myself. I usually get the same table and crew.
glentally Posted April 6, 2014 Author #10 Share Posted April 6, 2014 [quote I like meeting people, but being a third wheel at a couple's table is a bit awkward. great point! I agree. I'll start a conversation with anyone pretty much anywhere but that chit chat at dinner or even worse breakfast isn't my cup of tea.

Carnivals Maitre'd seem to do an excellent job for me, and only once, have I had to request another table. That time, they did seat me at a large table, but it was a couple, and a family with kids,,,and me? They moved me to a table for six, with four other singles. GREAT FUN! "SKY" Like I said, that was on Royal and Princess. This is my first time going solo on Carnival. When traveling with others the Carnival Maitre D has been fine. Adult trips we sat at adult tables, family trips we sat at tables with other families - and similarly-aged kids. Actually, come to think of it, when I traveled as a single parent with my kids, they seated me at a table with another single parent with their similarly-aged kids. Maybe Carnival does match up demographics.
SoCalKJ Posted April 7, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 7, 2014 Can I get a table for one since I really don't feel like small talk at dinner? I guess my only other option is the buffet. I'm possibly gonna book a solo getaway next weekend...DH has to work and since I just bought him a bass boat, I got permission to sail away alone...no biggie...have been on this particular one about 6 times...LOL! I very much want a table for one without a ton of small talk. I feel ya with regard to a little solo peace and quiet. I, however, refuse to give up the Friday night lasagna bolognese in favor of the buffet if my seating needs can't be accommodated. Fingers crossed!! (For us both!) (For us both!) check the single cruise sheet, most were out of Florida but not all, lasagna bolonese? I'll have to try that.
SoCalKJ Posted April 7, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) No...I'm in So Cal...the Inspiration has (with all fees/gratuities/etc) out of Long Beach/San Pedro a single cruiser deal for about $350. Not bad for one. Lasagna (on 3-night sailings) has typically been the first night....in this case, Friday night. It's so flippin' good!! kingoftheicedragons Posted April 7, 2014 #16 Share Posted April 7, 2014 Have you tried contacting JH? This sounds like something that he may be able to help you out with, and something that he appears to enjoy doing (doing what he can to help guests have the best cruise vacation that they can). It doesn't hurt to try. Otherwise, after that, the things that remain are talking to the maitre 'd once on board the ship or eating on Lido. jandjtexas Posted April 7, 2014 #17 Share Posted April 7, 2014 The easiest thing to do is make sure you have Any Time Dining, then just ask for a table for one. I dined alone in the MDR most nights on my solo cruise, took my Nook and read a bit, people watched some. An added benefit is that the service is so much faster. I was in and out quicker than ever before. My solo cruise was so I could get away and relax, did not wish to spend my time making small talk. Enjoy!
