VidaNaPraia Posted April 23, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 23, 2014 (edited) For those who are interested, here is a link to an recent excellent video on the pacification of the favelas in Rio.I post this not to discourage your visit to Rio de Janeiro but to strengthen your understanding. There are some good things happening but there remains much work to do. It's very difficult to sum up the situation, even for newbie WC tourists, in a review like this of some film. The government threw some short term money at a marketing problem, pre-WC/Olympics. Not enough money. Not enough thought. Not enough effort. Not a very thorough job. The problem of drug traffickers in some Rio neighborhoods got better for s bit, at the expense of other cities in the northeast where some seem to have moved, but the cops are still corrupt and the dealers are moving back in now. Once the WC & Olympic tourists go bye-bye, so probably will all the ambitious talk about change. If you've been around long enough to remember the Braxil of 1978" you may understand the saying to the effect that "Brazil is the country of the future....always".
