EdmPair Posted May 3, 2014 #26 Share Posted May 3, 2014 I see others have found out why I spend time here. That next cruise is just too far in the future! Filling the time with learning about my ship and ports keeps me from addictive things which might harm me more. (cleaning, laundry, gardens) I take my iPad on trips to act as photo sponge each night for my camera. That way, it says in the safe the next day and loss of the camera will only be the photos from that day. To carry it would be to defeat that function. I print out on paper various maps which I can then write on, highlight and otherwise abuse. It is $1 in paper compared to $1000 for the iPad. Plus, paper has no battery. However, to each their own. Rare cr8tiv1 Posted May 3, 2014 #27 Share Posted May 3, 2014 You don't need internet...for most devices. You load the app, choose your cruise line and date from a list, then "look" at each deck in the "explore your ship" selection. This puts the decks in your device's memory and you are good to go. It works great on my phone, making it very easy to carry around. It also worked well on my old tablet, but it won't stay in the memory on my new tablet (a Lenovo Yoga). The developers are aware of the glitch and are working on a solution. You won't know if it is an issue for you until you try it out. Give it a try, it is a great app. Sent from my Lenovo B8000-F using Forums mobile app You can download the deck maps to your Smart Phone and then open them without being connected. Be sure to do this at home. Plus, they have lots of other great features like creating specific events. Great support if you need them!

I do exactly the same. Especially the first paragraph. I wouldn't want to hurt myself before a trip (no matter how far away it is!)
Rare insidecabin Posted May 20, 2014 #29 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Ships are more the same than different. You need to think horizontal and vertical. On most ships there are 2 horizontals one high one low on the ship you need to master and the rest flows from them. You need to get your head round the pool deck and the one/two above it This will have the buffet, the pools, the sun lounging areas, bars and grills, the spa/gym, some have a front lounge(views) and some an aft outdoor area. work out where each elevator enter that area. Second horizontal will be entertainment deck(s), bars lounges, casino theatre and the main restaurants. Again work out the elevators and how they line up with the other horizontal on the top of the ship. Getting from one place to another is a mix of horizontal and vertical movements What we do for a new ship is(after lunch and the first beer aft bar if they have one) do a walk of both horizontals to get a feel for the flow and which is likely to be the best to do horizontal traverses for front to back. If you don't like smoke check the best way to by pass the casino. Check the daily for any guided tours, raffles, embarcation specials/demos. Pay particular attention to which elevators drop into dead ends, usualy a restaurant or low pax cabin deck where the medical center will be. and if there are routes that only happen on one side of the ship( on princess this tends to be starbourd side on the prom deck unless you go outside port side. Looks like you are on the Star so master the promenade and the lido on the first day bge arefull with the aft elevators and going down to deck 6 to get to the forwards stuff. If fixed dining check where your table is in the dining room. Oh and while doing the tour of the ship stop at a bar for a drink you are on holiday. Another trick is most ships code the carpets on the cabin decks so you know which side you are on, some it is colors or maybe a pattern like fishes swimming(forward) we try to avoid doing horisontaltraverses on cabin decks unless in a hurry, use the public areas where things are it helps you learn the ship, and you never know what you mat stumble on. Another thing always check the daily for whats going on and where. Join the roll call.
