1stime cruiser Posted May 19, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2014 This will be my first time with a balcony cabin on my upcoming cruise. I have a 6 year old and want to make sure he never goes out to the balcony. Are the locks child proof. Do I need to bring something to make sure he doesn't sneak out. cuyahoga11 Posted May 19, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 19, 2014 There is a slide lock about 6 foot up the door
angie1818 Posted May 19, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 19, 2014 Not child proof. They have a finger lock similar to an inside dead bolt lock. At least that has been my experience. I don't know if they offer any other type device to keep children off the balcony. Ask your room steward.
Cruise-Crazy Posted May 19, 2014 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2014 The lock is at the top of the door. I don't think a 6YO could reach it.
dljones Posted May 19, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2014 I think it matters what ship you are on. I would call Carnival and ask. What ship are you sailing? I don't recall ever seeing a slide lock on the door.
amyh13 Posted May 19, 2014 #6 Share Posted May 19, 2014 The locks have been unreachable on every cruise I have been on. And the doors are pretty difficult to open even when unlocked.
springs741 Posted May 19, 2014 #7 Share Posted May 19, 2014 My 9 year old had trouble opening the door and yes there is a latch maybe not quite 6 ft high. It was about eye level for me but I am 6ft tall. I think you will be fine.
kona_wahine Posted May 20, 2014 #8 Share Posted May 20, 2014 The doors are pretty heavy. It would have to be a strong 6 year old to open it I think. The locks are up high. Ours on the Liberty in January wouldn't line up so couldn't lock it.
092306 Posted May 20, 2014 #9 Share Posted May 20, 2014 It's not childproof. Kids are very resourceful when they're determined to do something or curious. He might be able to reach it by using the table or stool in the cabin, but I wouldn't think he'd be without you in the cabin long enough to be able to accomplish that task. I would definitely discuss with him the dangers of the balcony and how he isn't to go out on it without you, etc so that you have the peace of mind that he won't try to get out there on his own at night. sjcruiser Posted May 20, 2014 #10 Share Posted May 20, 2014 I'm 6 feet, and the sliding locks is just above my head. It does take a little force to open it, so I think it may be hard for a 6 year old to open it, although not impossible. I would set the rules (no going onto balcony without me, or an adult, etc.) for going out on the balcony before sailing.
