jaz2411 Posted June 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2014 Hi, I was just wondering if anybody has been on a cruise ( in particular the Norwegian Epic) where their cabin was above the ships nightclub ? My girlfriend and I booked a balcony cabin on the Norwegian Epic several months ago through a travel agent and was told we would be allocated our cabin number nearer the departure date. We depart on 22nd June 2014 from Barcelona and have just found out our cabin number is 8047 on deck 8 directly above Bliss nightclub. At first, I wasnt too concerned but have read some cabin reviews on CC for this area of the ship and it isnt good reading :( However, some cabin reviews near 8047 dont even mention the noise. I have rang the travel agent asking if it would be possible to move cabins and she said deck 13 was available but we would have to pay an extra £300  My girlfriend is stressing as it is her first cruise and wants things to be perfect...I didnt think I would be having to pack ear plugs ! Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks ps...the nightclub I believe is open till 3am and we have to be up at 6 for excursions

Thanks ps...the nightclub I believe is open till 3am and we have to be up at 6 for excursions It looks like you booked a guarantee category in the first place - this category is cheaper than booking a confirmed cabin number at time of booking. Hence why you are given whats leftover. It can be a hit and a miss, and is a chance you took when booking a guarantee. Your travel agent however should have explained this to you at time of booking - If not, it is he/she I would be rattled at. You could always ask your TA to call NCL and ask for another pot luck - but guarantee cabin - looks like you are stuck with it unless you pay the full price for choice of cabin. Coastalbreezes Posted June 5, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 5, 2014 I was in a cabin above Bliss once and will say that we did hear the thumping from the bass until they closed making it difficult to sleep. Another time, we were under the gym and that was noisy also. Ever since those cruises, I always check what's above and below me before booking my cabin! rvsullivan Posted June 5, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2014 It appears your TA booked a balcony guaranty and not a specific cabin. It's a roll of the dice as to what cabin you get in this circumstance. I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but full disclosure by the TA would be expected in the U.S. I would lay this problem at the foot of the TA and make them rectify the situation if they did not disclose the potential downside of a guaranty. Single Cruiser Posted June 5, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 5, 2014 Yep, you'll hear the bass from the Music. It usually quietens down after 2 unless there are a lot of people in. I've left after 3 before!!:cool: The problem with guarantee grades is often you'll get from what's left after people have selected their cabin. I've had one on Spirit with a pole in the middle as a guarantee, another below pool deck or next to a service door. Since then I'm always careful and choose a cabin. Have you booked excursions with NCL? If so you could ring them and say you might have to cancel due to not getting enough sleep, amazing what can be done at risk of losing revenue!!! sdmike Posted June 5, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2014 I would pay the extra money and move. I need my sleep, and I find few things more annoying that the THUMP THUMP THUMP of bass at all hours. You've already been warned on here about the risk of booking a guarantee room, so I won't harp on that. However, if you do that again, make sure that you would ok with ANY room in your guarantee category or above. It's likely you'll end up in a room that nobody else wants. Mrs. Squirrel Posted June 5, 2014 #8 Share Posted June 5, 2014 I would pay the extra money and move. I agree. We always pack earplugs for just-in-case cabin noises, but I don't think earplugs will deal with the thump, thump of a base. You might still feel the vibration even if you don't hear it. That may be enough to keep one or both of you from getting good rest.

dalgirl Posted June 5, 2014 #11 Share Posted June 5, 2014 This is why I never book guarantee, even if it is cheaper, because I don't want to take just any cabin. Doing your homework beforehand would have been the best course, but there you are. Look at it this way, someone has to be over Bliss:p Pay the money and move. jaz2411 Posted June 5, 2014 Author #12 Share Posted June 5, 2014 Thankyou for your replies folks. When we booked back in March the Travel Agent didnt inform us it was a 'guarantee booking'....and this being our first cruise together we didnt know what a guarantee cabin was anyway. I remember asking him at the time of booking if he could give us our cabin number and all he said was 'dont worry that will arrive in due course'...and took our money in full. I guess if I knew then what I know now we would have looked through the brochure and chose our own cabin like many of you suggest. I'm hoping this wont spoil our holiday as it looks like a fantastic ship.

Dalgirl, not all of us are cruise experts like you and can assure you getting a cheap deal was not the issue here. If you care to look at previous posts we didnt know what a guarantee booking was. But you are correct should have done our homework thats why we've looked through the brochure and decided to upgrade and book a Haven suite...like you say, someone has to stay there :p
Rare Cloudyrain Posted June 5, 2014 #14 Share Posted June 5, 2014 We had our first cruise on the Epic last year and booked another 2 less than 12 months afterwards (different ships, but only due to cost) because it made such a good impression on us! We were on the Epic in May last year and there were only 2 nights that I would say Bliss was "banging", the rest of the time it was pretty quiet after about 1am: although we didn't have a room above it, I'm just going on when we were walking about at night going from bar to bar to casino. To be honest with it being a port intensive cruise, although it was reasonably lively, it wasn't like being in the middle of Newcastle town centre at 2am! I'm sure you will have a brilliant time! TrumpyNor Posted June 5, 2014 #15 Share Posted June 5, 2014 (edited) I learned my lesson a few years ago, when we had an aft-facing cabin on the Epic that was only two decks below the Spice H2O. The music from there was disturbing (especially the bass), and I believe that you would unfortunately have the same problem when your cabin is situated directly above the Bliss. Earlier I only looked at the deckplan for the deck where our cabin was before choosing a cabin, but now I take a good look at the deckplans for the decks both above and below our cabin before I make my decision. I agree that you should pay the £300 if you think that the possible noise might disturb you (especially when you have to get up early in the morning) - to have a happy girlfriend with you on the cruise would be worth it... :p But whatever you choose to do - at least you are prepared - or "warned" (it would be much worse if you didn't find out about it until you were on board, and probably not possible to do anything about it then). dalgirl Posted June 6, 2014 #17 Share Posted June 6, 2014 I am not a born expert. In fact, our most recent AFT balcony on the BA had a problem with sound from spice 2.0 above us. I knew going in that some people had complained about the noise, thanks CC, but I wanted that balcony. The reality was that while we were at sea the noise was nonexistent. But berthed in Bermuda we could hear the percussion during the party in the evening. Just slightly, enough that DH went to sleep, but I had a little trouble. So would I do it again? I am in the same cabin on the Getaway in September:) I have learned a lot from reading CC, so keep following the boards. And for you, now, pay the money or take a chance and stay. But you know what to expect;) Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Forums mobile app

b_cruise Posted June 6, 2014 #19 Share Posted June 6, 2014 I have heard of people going directly to guest services and asking to be moved as soon as u board. Or calling ur TA and getting them to call NCL. Tell them it's ur anniversary or something, lol!
CruisingGs Posted June 6, 2014 #20 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Thank you so much for posting this. We haven't had this issue before, so I didn't even think about it. I called NCL last night to see if either of our rooms were going to be in this situation. One was, but she switched floors for us. We will be 2 floors away from one of our rooms, but I rather that then my mother in law and kids not being able to sleep. They would be miserable the whole cruise. joanna0627 Posted June 6, 2014 #21 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Just recently returned from the BA and we had a mini suite right about the shakers bar. Room 9240. It was horrible. After 3 days of calling and talking to anybody, they moved us. The ship was full so we had to wait till someone was leaving while in Bermuda. They couldn't have been nicer to us. But the HD told us that there are at least 20 rooms on each ship that are not in the best location. You don't realize how loud it can be in that room at night. I don't think they should let anyone stay in that room...ever.....

Bonbi Posted June 7, 2014 #25 Share Posted June 7, 2014 (edited) I think you made a great call to move up to a Haven. This is a review I ran across last week on the CCL boards, he was also below the club on a CCL ship: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2047324 Edited June 7, 2014 by Sea Turtle Cruiser
