Rare Tapi Posted June 12, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 12, 2014 I'm from Puerto Rico. While there are some absolutely beautiful and idyllic beaches throughout the island, they aren't that close to the port. Your ship will dock in the historic district of Old San Juan which is actually surrounded by a wall built by the Spaniards in the 1500's. However, if you want to make San Juan a beach day, the closest one will be Condado Beach, about 10 minutes away. As someone mentioned above, Isla Verde is also an option, although a bit farther away near the International Airport. Both of these beaches are busy, city beaches, lined with high rise condominiums and hotels. Access to these beaches can be a bit tricky since there are only a handful of pedestrian access points. If you drive a bit out of the city, you can go to Luquillo Beach to the east or Dorado Beach to the west. Both have that brochure photo feel, but they will be harder to get to and from on the limited amount of time. Personally, I'd recommend that you take advantage of the beaches at the other ports of call in your itinerary and focus instead on sightseeing in San Juan. It's a unique city, like no other place in the Caribbean. Spend your day exploring the cobblestoned streets of Old San Juan and it's 500 year old Spanish architecture, including museums, cathedrals, forts, parks and fountains. There's also world class shopping and dining, specifically in the SoFo area of the old city. Alternatively, you can also explore the Bacardi Rum Distillery right across the bay, or you can take a day trip to the El Yunque Rainforest. Have a great time!
