I was also told by my TA that AQ can select either dining room as stated by YVR Cruiser above by letting the Maitre'd at the MDR know. We did, however, prepay our tips because we don't want the charge later on.

You can go to the MDR on a space available basis, your assigned dining room is Blu.

I've read in a great review from January that if you are seated in Blu but want something from the MDR menu, you can be accommodated. Maybe someone who has tried recently can verify.

We sailed in AQ on the Solstice recently. You can order something from the MDR menu and they seemed more than happy to get that for us.

Also, I would do nothing with the Select Dining on your reservation. You are more than welcome in the MDR, which you may want to do if you meet someone you may want to have dinner with from another category. There was never a problem eating in the MDR, booking a specialty restaurant, eating in Blu or going to the buffet. They seated us pronto in the MDR -- but only the side without the reserved traditional dining.

I also would do nothing with the Select dining, I have been in the position twice where I chose Select dining and prepaid my tips only to upgrade later to AQ. I just left them on because it was easier.

It should be clearly understood though that if you are in AQ and choose Select Dining, it has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on your ability to eat in the MDR either way. The only criteria is space available.
