96l

A tropical wave (96L) is gaining some strength east of the Windwards. Preliminary forecasts have this system moving WNW toward the NW Caribbean several days down the road then posssibly into the Gulf.

It is still very early to make track or intensity forecasts for this system. A low pressure area has not formed yet.

That's just the zone where the tropical wave / depression is likely to travel in. You're right, a lot of people like to post the scary graphics to get their website / news rankings up. The Islands may limit development in the Caribbean. The best chance for development will likely be in the Gulf at least a week down the road.

Whatever the development or how strong, seems 96L will cause some less than perfect weather in the Virgin Islands.

You are probably right about that. Latest models now have the system over the Bahamas late this weekend into early next week with some development as it starts to pull away into the Atlantic. This is a classic example of how the models can be very poor in the early going.

96L will likely be upgraded to a tropical depression or storm later today. New models suggest that it may not move out to sea and possibly may move into SE Florida in a few days.

96L is a classic example of why tropical systems sometimes can not be predicted very far in advance. Several days ago the forecast had it moving into the Gulf. The past few days near the SE Bahamas and out to sea. This morning the new trend is SE Florida.

The models midday Saturday have yet again changed some. 96L is now predicted to still head toward SE Florida over the next 2-3 days, then move north to just east of Florida and NC.

The forecasts are all over the place. This is what happens when a low center has not formed yet. Regardless, it appears that wet weather sill be moving up into the Bahamas the next few days.
