taormina beach, cable car

We are arriving in messina on October 30th and want to spend the time in taormina, the town, ampitheatre and then on the beach. As anyone done this on their own, by bus, train, cable car. The ship arrives at 8.00 am and only departs at 6pm so we have lots of time. Or is it better to hire a car. We have done a ship tour previously that included mount etna and taormina but it was a little rushed, so wanted to spend more time in taormina, the ship doesnt offer taormina on your own excursion.

Taormina itself is very easy to just do on your own. Part of the town is just for pedestrian traffic and the places you mentioned are easily walkable.
