Final payment 1 day late

I know the OP is tired of the direction this thread has taken, but I think people feel frustrated by the bad financial decisions they see people all around them making. It really doesn't matter if you pay by cash or pay off a credit card each month, but I honestly feel frightened for anyone who is one paycheck away from financial disaster. If someone can't pay for their cruise until they get their paycheck, what happens when they have an unexpected necessary expense? I wish they would cut out the discretionary spending until they can build up a savings cushion, for their own good. I'm glad I did. I also care about the impact on everyone else, including me, when people can't pay their bills because of unexpected expenses or job loss and end up in foreclosure, defaulting on loans, and filing for bankruptcy.

The OP has probably bowed out. I know I would have. It was a simple question that didn't warrant all of the financial advice that may not even be in order. And why do you feel bad? A person not paying for their cruise has zero impact on me because if they don't pay they don't go. Moreover there's a world of people out there who make all sorts of financial decisions. Rich folks do it everyday. So it's not on me to go on a website and start making assumptions about their financial acumen or wisdom based solely on limited information.

maybe this person is a novice on planning for vacations. Maybe they ran into some type of hardship that put them right at the wire. Who knows. I can't assume the worst, because I don't know their circumstance. All I know is they need an extra day, which I'm sure Carnival will grant so long as they are made aware. I wouldn't assume and just pay it a day late.

I always pay with a credit card, specifically for the reward points. We're taking our 4th cruise this year in October via points earned. The casino gave us one for free, the points earned equaled one for free - how is this a bad thing? We will have sailed 4 times but only paid twice. That's the type of math I like!

I am going to put my flame retardant suit on now before I say this

if you need your next paycheck to pay off your cruise, then I think you need to get some financial planning in place. It's one thing to live paycheck to paycheck to pay for NECESSITIES, it's another to do it for a vacation. I truly feel sorry for people who are spending their only liquid funds on a vacation (must be why I didn't take a vacation for 15 years in the 1980's-1990's)

There's got to be one in every thread......

Why is it so hard to be non-judgemental of others?

Nobody has any real idea about the lives and situations of others.

Let people work on their own issues themselves and police their own lives and finances themselves. (Unless they ask for your help or insight.)

"Live and let live" is a very wise adage -- but I would also add, "and don't get your judgey britches in a wad!"

Really?? I book many cruises and vacations and pay along the way. Not many can pay for a vacation in full, all at once...which is precisely why the industry allows payments. Clearly you have never looked at a teachers pay .

And NO, the best way is NOT to pay with a credit cared. Absurd advice .

I always pay with a credit card. I basically use my Discover card to get the 5% cash back reward. I've never had any trouble or any dispute using the credit card. I use the Discover card travel agent. I just booked a cruise to Hawaii and got $400+ cash back reward, plus $475 OBC. To say "NOT pay with a credit card" is absurd!

Amen. Can't believe how many folks on here are all about running up huge amounts of debt on their credit cards!! Cut em' up and pay the honest way folks.

You really do assume a lot don't you. When I get my credit card bill, I pay it off, I never carry a balance. If one can't be responsible with a credit card, then I agree they should not own one or even go on a cruise if they're that so far into debt. That's the first thing we taught our children, and so far they have stuck to staying out of debt.

So many simple minded people assume that if you use a credit card to pay for things that you don't have the money/accumulating debt/living beyond your means. Those of us who pay them off every month are just using the card as a means of payment (same as cash cheques debit and money orders)

Yes, that is true. Some don't realize if they have the means to pay it off at the end of the month, that they can be rewarded with money, free airline tickets, on and on. I have enough money on my bonus rewards from Discover to book another cruise with no money coming out of my pocket. One just needs to be smart and clever enough to take advantage of the freebies from credit card companies. If you're not disciplined enough with a credit card, then it's not for you.

None of this has anything to do with the original post....everyone retreat to their happy place and stop judging each other...

It really does have to do with the original post:

She's asking questions and we're giving the answers though some here may not like the answers!

Question... what happens if you by accident (on purpose), miss the final payment window by a day??? Asking for a fellow teacher who has her final payment on October 14th (the day bf payday) She wanted to know if she could just pay her remaining balance on the 15th?? Could she call and ask for a 1 day extension?? I think she is hinting that I let her borrow the $500 she needs to pay off her cruise ...but that is not going to happen  so I thought I would ask the question to the wise people of CC! :p

So, we comment and give advice and some here goes wanky at the advice given. The OP here hinted to let her borrow $500 to pay off the cruise.

Again, if you can't follow through with a commitment to go on a vacation and pay off the final payment, why strap yourself with debt? The OP asked and we delivered.

Just a little bit judgmental on your part.

There is a huge flaw in your argument, there have been times I have needed my next paycheck to finishing off a cruise, its not because I am living paycheck to paycheck. Its called budgeting, i can afford to pay Xdollers out of each paycheck, What I need is not a financial planning, but less people who are so know it all like you.

In closing I am glad I am not you.....

There was no intention to offend, But this post makes a lot of sense. For me....It is called...setting aside an amount you PAY yourself every paycheck.Sending that payment to Savings. Then when you make the reservation over the phone, you put it on a credit card. Then your bill comes. You transfer money to your Checking account and pay the bill. We are taking a road trip next month. I have six $50 dollar gas cards in my wallet......NOT one penny spent. All rewards from points on my Credid Card. Which is through my Credit Union. Has NO yearly fee. And has a very low interest rate. Which as I usually pay off each month, is not an issue anyway. And honestly, I was not being a smart a**. I honestly did not know you could book a cruise with a check or cash. How do you do it? Always use a travel agent? Again. Not being a flamer. Just curious. My husband is a cash only person when possible. he could live off of the grid very happily. But he would never cruise if I did not book them..so.......Sorry I offended. Did not mean too do so.

I use my Credit card for Vacations & Dog Bills.mostly. ( our dog is allergic to Florida...grass, fleas, some foods, dust mites.......you name it, and by now we are attached to him ..very much so, and he is a good guard dog. ) and that is about it. It does not have a yearly fee. I get rewards points. I usually pay it off every month so the low interest rate...below 9% is not usually an issue.........A couple of years ago.........We had a four day vacation at Disneyworld.....staying at the Coronado Resort inside Disney,...and room, tickets, etc cost me..$60 dollars for the entire trip. All done through points I had earned on reward points through the Card. My card is through my Credit Union to which I have belonged since `1969. A branch office is less than a mile from my home. As said, I already have the gas cards for our road trip with rewards. Before we leave, I will order gift cards to various restaurants to use on the road. The Rewards add up. And I only use them for vacations too.Iguess I was just looking at my perspective on the issue.Again. No intent to offend. I honestly did not know it could be done. But then..of course. You could do so with a TA.

Oh My...I am unsubscribing to MY OWN THREAD!!!!

I know you are the OP, but you were asking for a friend:

Asking for a fellow teacher who has her final payment on October 14th (the day bf payday)

You may not have asked about credit cards and managing payments, but it does seem odd to me that someone who is a teacher has to ask you if she can be late in making the final payment. If she had a credit card the suggestion would have never of been brought up. But I do see that plenty here use their credit cards to get the extra perks and to make final payment.
