Something different for LONG hair on formal night?

I am not good when it comes to hair (very simple when it comes to hair and makeup cause my clothes are a bit on the trendy side), hoping someone out there has a suggestion for formal nights? I have long straight light brown hair, very boring when paired with a floor length dress! I don't want any of those horrible Bar Mitvah does I did in the 90's, something simple but a bit more elegant than everyday???? Thanks!

Ever try just curling your hair with a curling iron or hot rollers or velcro rollers or a round brush and blow dryer? A little volume and curl really makes hair pop. You can also do a pony tail with a pretty pony tail holder(NOT A SCRUNCHIE, PLEASE!!!) or even a real flower, think rose bud with stem, wrapped around a plain elastic would be pretty. No idea, but maybe you can buy 1 flower on the ship?

The right hair and makeup ACCENTUATE any outfit. If your clothes are way over the top or too busy, keep the makeup, hair and jewelry simple, without the jewelry being too small. Too small jewelry, such as small studs, if you're trying to make a statement with trendy, hot-colored clothes, just don't work. Hoops 1'2" - 1" are ALWAYS safe.

If you can see your makeup and hair and not your face, it's tooooo much!

Nicole, you might go to a good beauty supply store and check out their really cute "curls". They are a small hairpiece that consist of a clip or band with curls that come in a wide variety of colors to match your own hair color. You just pin your own hair up, or put it in a pony tail and then add on the curls. Very quick, very simple, and very pretty. Practice at home first and you will be amazed at the variety of hair styles you can have. Wear the curls high or low, lots of choices. Perfect for a day in the hot and humid Caribbean or after a late swim. In fact, you might find yourself wearing it the whole cruise. NO ONE will know it's not the real you. LOL

I have the same hair & the same problem. I do the hot rollers, big hair thing for the photo; the whole thing flops under its own weight before the appetizers are served. At home when I go out, I get a french twist (about $15; takes 10-15 minutes) or a twist where they keep the ends out & curl them on top of my head in a cascade (about $50, takes about 1 hour). Thanks for the suggestions. I have done the curl things for weddings, etc., but from experience living in Miami it flops VERY fast and with the wind on deck forget it! I think i will keep it simple, classy clip half up and curl the ends under, dress is strapless so I need a little hair down, Bought some great elegant pink diamond earings (fairly small) to go with the dress so hopefully that will keep the attention away from the hair, jeje!

QVC has this lovely ponytail hair extension that is on a clip. I believe it sells for around $25 or so. I ordered one, and the color is absolutely [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img] very close to my own hair color. The texture of the piece is nice, too. You basically place your own hair in a ponytail and then clip this piece on. It looks sexy and appropriate for a formal night! Well girls, I wear my hair the same way every day. It is shoulder length and layered at the bottom...kind of like a bob with layers. Anyway, my DH HATES for me to wear it up. So, will it be ok if I just add a little more curl to it on formal night and basically wear it the same as I always do? Thanks for any advice.

I'm having some hair issues myself! After reading this I went out and bought a hair piece. It looks good, I thought I'd be happy with it BUT... now my hubby tells me that he loves my hair down and hopes I'll leave it down for formal night!!!

My hair isn't straight, but isn't exactly curly either. I haven't been able to find a product or a method to get it to do either. If I try to straighten it it looks either fuzzy or stiff and if I try to get it to curl the ends look great but I always have that "old perm" look. It's about bra strap length with a few long layers.

I've learned over the past few months that as a collective, we know just about everything. We know how to pick a formal, how and where to buy it, what color it should be, how much we should pay for it, what shoes to wear with it, what color and style bag works best with it and which jewelry will be perfect... now if only I can figure out what to do with this mess of hair, I'll be the belle of the ball! Miami, I'm hearing your pain! My hair is now midway down my back. 2 years ago it was easily pulled up into a tasteful french twist. Now I just have too much of it! I just bought a gown with a very delightful back, so am looking for great ideas to pull my hair up and off of it. Scissors perhaps? LOL!!

If anyone comes up with a good idea , please post I will keep checking this thread. My daughter has beautiful very long waist length thick hair with natural curl and wave. BUT it is really awful to get up into a twist or anything like that , she just has so much of it, even after she has just gotten it cut. When she goes out for a formal evening or on a cruise she likes to ware it up sometimes and it just doesn't work. Believe it or not once she was a bridesmaid in a wedding and the bride wanted all the girls to ware there hair up (for pictures ,etc.) So she went to the salon and oh, my goodness, you should have seen it , awful(think Marge Simpson), we did the best we could to tone it down before the wedding. After the wedding, that evening I helped her take her hair down. 136 bobby pins in her hair. What a mess. She doesn't want to cut it. Strangers actually come up to her and comment on her hair, so it would be a shame to cut it. But perhaps someone on this board has a magic trick to putting up long hair ?? Thanks you. I have long hair, also. It reaches to the center of my back. My DF likes my hair down (what is it w/ these guys?)and now I'm in a dilemna. I have a formal gown that has a pretty back and the hair has got to go up! I am a little concerned with being windblown and have decided to either french braid it or wear it half up and curl the ends.

I am not real good at up-do's and I surely don't want to look like Marge Simpson LOL Cori!

Although I'm no longer a trendy teen, I still shop at Claire's and their sister store, Icing. They sell tons of hair products and while you have to search past the styles that are probably too "young" for anyone over 19, they still carry a lot of good hair styling items. I recently bought cute bun holders much like what ballet dancers wear in their hair, some "hairtique" products (as I like to call them) that you use by inserting your hair into a slot and twist it up to your head (sorry I don't have the actual name of the product because I already tossed the packaging), and some attractive rhinestone pins to add extra sparkle.

Good luck to you! I hadn't thought about my hair on formal night yet so this has me thinking ahead!
