Hairdresser Tipping--not Cruise but Fashion Related!

Recommended Posts

I finally realized that the Cruise Sisters were the best people to ask about this! How do you figure the tip for your hairdresser?

I go to a pretty much standard salon in a suburb of Minneapolis. It's not the type of place that has shampoo girls and gilded decor, just your average nice neighborhood salon. I never sure how to tip--is it a percentage of the bill? Based on what services you have? The time you're there?

I usually add some extra $$ when I'm especially pleased with the results, i.e. if the change in hair color turns out really well, etc. I always go to the same person and have for several years now.

So, your thoughts and experiences? Thanks!

Well, this varies by all the above you mentioned. I do go to a salon that is a nice salon and have been having my hair done by the same girl for over 4 years. She highlights, cuts, and styles my hair. My bill is usually around $130.00, so I typically tip 15.00-20.00. Depending on if she cuts it that time or not, type thing. Just sort of base it on what all she did. My DH goes to her as well and his haircut is $17.00 and he tips her $8.00. So realistically our "percentage" of a tip doesn't match, ya know? I just think since I pay so much for what she does that 20.00 is plenty. Because she does get a % of what the cost of my service is from the salon. Make sense?
Well, probably a longer answer then you wanted.

In our area the tip is generally 15% for your average salon and 20% for your spa type salon. The percentage is on the total bill. For example, my haircut costs $40 and I add a $6 tip, which is 15%.

Well I'm moving!! My cut and color is $150 when you add in 20% that $180 every 6 weeks. Seems to pretty much be the going rate for this area. Debbi

Hi the same gal has been cutting my hair for more than 11 years. 22.00 for the cut..I usually tip her 3.00 or 4.00.

$150 for a cut and color?

Holy Cow!!!

That's $1560 a year for hair. Did I calculate that right?

You could finance a nice 7-day cruise for that much $$...

My stylist does a cut and perm for me. I don't remember what the bill was last time, but my rule of thumb is to tip her 15 percent.

When I have my hair done in Oklahoma where I live my cut, weave and style is about $50. and I usually give her $7 or $8 tip. That is the going rate around here...When I visit my daughter in CA, which is several times a year,I have a hairstylist out there that I just love but he does a weave, cut and style and charges me $150 and then I add 15%, what a difference your location makes...the thing is I always try to have my hair done when I visit because he is so good with color and is always up on what is the latest trend. Our next cruise leaves from San Pedro and I am already planning to have my hair done out in CA 2 days before we board so I know the color will be what I want. I think it is so funny when I tell people that I have a mid west and a southern California hair stylist. Sissy

Sissy, I hear you, I live in Florida and get my hair cut in Maryland!

My guy in MD is at a pretty great salon for the area, only about two other competitors on that level, everything else is Hair Cuttery/GreatClips. He gives me a really great deal, usually I just pay $60. Sometimes that is cut and highlights, sometimes just highlights.

Now that I have moved away from MD, I went home and it was $45 for a cut, so I gave him $10. Before, when it was always $60, I gave him $20 because I was getting WAY more than $60 worth of services and he hooks me up because I bring clients to him. I think his/salon's going rate is about $45 for a cut and $150 for highlights, etc... He also tells me to use Loreal in a box and then he just does the highlights, he says same difference! I would rather pay the $8 at WalMart than the $80 for him to color it!

I am also in the service industy, and we tend to overtip, because we always like to be overtipped! What goes around, comes around!

Jane, a weave is just another word for hilights, it is done with the tip of a comb weaving thru the hair, then foil is put under the woven strands and the bleach is applied, then it is wrapped up in the foil, it is done in just the areas that you want blond hilights, the stylist has a lot more control where the strands of blond are placed than when a cap is used. I think it is the usual hilights, we have always called it a weave. I know you don't tip the owner, but now many of the stylists are independent contractors in a salon, they buy their own supplies and rent the space, I wonder if it is customary to tip them as well, they keep the majority of what you pay and just pay the shop owner a small rental fee. Sissy, my hairdresser had her establishment built to her own specifications. Prior to this when she was renting accross the street I gave her an $8 tip, which I almost had to force on her. Now she refuses point blank and says it is her pleasure to have me as a customer. One thing I have noticed since living in the South is that the people are so gracious, just don't say "This is the way we did it up North", because if you do you will encounter their wrath, LOL.

Trevoli,
it really is the average price around here, especially if you wish to keep your hair attached to the scalp Debbi

Sissy,

Thanks for the explaination on "weave". Yes, I know what you're talking about now. I just never heard it called that. Perhaps it's regional.

I don't have my hair highlighted, but have seen the process and many of my blonde friends have it done. A cap? Sheesh...I thought that went out 20 years ago! :-)

Yes, tipping an individual contractor does get into a grey area. Though how is it really different than an owner who pays rent and salaries and you don't tip?

I never have my hair done with a cap,but they do still use them. I have been having something blonde done to my hair since I was in highschool and that is quite a while back, since I am in my sixties now. Sissy

I got out of the business 10 years ago, after being a hair stylist for 15 years. There are big tippers, moderate tippers, not at all tippers, people who don't tip the owner (me, for half of my years). While I have to say receiving tips was really great, it always helped pay the bills, it was never assumed that everyone left a tip.

I would like to add that owners and stylists that rent the chairs have additional overhead that employees don't. Employees don't have to buy their own supplies, pay their own liability insurance, pay all their own taxes (SSI, medicare is half paid for by their employers, workers comp and liability is paid completely by the employer). They don't have to share in the cost of towels and laundry, telephone, housekeeping, etc... If an employee takes a day off, the owner also suffers a loss of income. Just to let you all know there is much more to owning a salon than meets the eye. Geez, I'm remembering just why we got rid of our shop last year!

Everyone, thanks so much for your input! I'm very relieved to find that, on average, I have been in the adequate to over tipping range. Whew!

 • 3 weeks later...
Hi ladies..I have long hair to the center of my back. I've been going to the same girl to do my hair for almost ten years now. She will highlight, shampoo, cut, and style my hair for $65.00. Usually takes 2 to three hours. I usually tip her $15.00. She is the owner of the salon, also. Am I tipping enough?

Wow - there are some expensive places to live as far as hair services go! I paid $80 on Sat. for a weave (foil), color, haircut and style, plus a $10 tip - I was not really pleased with the color/highlights. The dilemma I've had is finding someone that does my hair right and that I'm willing to pay for. I think $80 for all of that is low in this area. I've gone to other places that charge $100 - $110 for the above services and $30 - $35 for a haircut. I go every 4 weeks for haircut and every 8 weeks for color/highlights and I'm just not willing to pay that much. I pay $25 for a haircut + a $5 tip. I figure I will train the guy that is doing my hair now! I am going to call him and let him know that I'm not happy with the color/highlights. He will offer to do them again, but I'm running out of time - I leave on Sun. Thought about having another cut and foil on the ship - is that too risky?

Elaine, I would never have more than a blow-dry in the beauty salon on the ship. The girls who work there are very young and have not had much experience, PLUS they will charge you an arm and a leg for their services. Get it done before you go!

I hope there are beauticians on the ship who know what they are doing. I have very thick ultra curly hair that will probably need to be done at some point if I plan to look presentable during the entire cruise - 10 days - but 4 days in port before that. My hairdresser needs a double appointment for me and uses a ceramic straightener or flattening iron. I was hoping to bring all my own products, including the ceramic straightener, and have someone on ship do it for me. Now I am beginning to doubt if they will be able to. Plase do not say to just let it curl. That is what I am doing right now to try it out and I do not think I can get away with it on the cruise. A tall skinny actress can, but I cannot. I am just now trying to figure out what I can do with this mess for work tomorrow. Great thread.
