Is this for real? You've got to be kidding.

What exactly are you questioning being real?

I can understand not wanting to look like one of the servers/dining stewards. For my last cruise, the only decent clothes that fit me were black pants and white tops. Yup, I looked like a casino dealer for the entire cruise  :D

Did any high rollers tip you? ;)

I never cease to be amazed by the questions asked on CC.

Really? I would think this would be the perfect place to ask a question like this. It's the snarky comments that get me...entertaining? Sure, for the most part. I for one am thrilled that some folks are still interested in following a stated dress code and helping to enhance the festive atmosphere around formal nights! Yeay!

Being an Aussie I don't understand the wearing white after Labour Day. What is Labour Day and why can't you wear white? I guess I am asking this question because the thread seems to have diverged from the original topic in some ways. I am also amazed at the "swipes" some people seem to like having against others. I'm only a newbie, but am trying to fit in and understand the CC politics. :)

Labour Day is a statutory holiday which falls on the first Monday in September. It's purpose is to celebrate workers. It is celebrated in Canada and the US. Possibly the UK but I am not sure of that.

In the northern climates it sort of marks the return to cooler weather and the warmer clothing comes out-----although September does have some lovely warm days. Winter clothing is normally in darker colours although you do see some heavier items in a softer winter white.

While it is not a hard and fast fashion rule anymore around here, white dresses and slacks will gradually disappear after Labour Day.

I'm starting to get things ready for a Caribbean cruise in a few weeks and you can bet I'm dragging out the white stuff. If it's hot, then white is hot too. :D

I'm so glad you said that. I thought it was just me. :D

Of all the issues I have to plan for in taking a cruise, colour coordination with the dining room stewards would not even make the list. I have enough trouble getting myself coordinated. :D

I must admit that they do look nice in the pictures but from a practical standpoint they would get dirty very quickly.

Personally, I would only wear a white dinner jacket if a) I was in the tropics or Monte Carlo and b) it was summer where I am from (june-aug).

Some men like to wear a white dinner jacket on formal nights any time of year, and with novelty bow ties and cummerbunds.

I'm old fashioned I guess, and prefer black tie (or a blue-black dinner suit if the sun is setting late). I really like getting a chance to dress up on cruises. I usually wear a jacket every evening lol.

Thank you. This IS the perfect place to ask a question like this. I don't mind the "entertaining" replies but the snarky answers I could so without.

But not from some of the posters..if it's a subject you are not interested in, don't reply with a snarky answer.

I've never heard of anyone wanting to match colours or not clash colours with the serving staff before. What do you do when you go to a fine dining restaurant - phone ahead to find out what colours the servers wear?

Actually, I am trying NOT to match with the serving staff. I know my original question said I didn't want to clash, but thought at the time that was the best way to word it. I did correct myself in later posts...but no, I do not want to be mistake for wait staff.

OK, thanks for clarifying. Now it makes sense.

I am so shocked at how rude people on this board can be it is no wonder that there are so few people who post with any regularity I'm sorry that you have never found a situation where wearing a white dinner jacket may interfere with the fact that the waitstaff at that establishment also wear a white jacket it's not that uncommon. They even parody that fact in movies for Goodness sake. While I can't speak for the poster I would imagine that he's just concerned with whether not he should bother to bring a white dinner jacket for the cruise or just bring his black dinner jacket. Either way there is absolutely no reason for you and others to continue to bully and bluster on about your opinions and how ridiculous it is to inquire. I find it ridiculous that you feel the need to say anything if you can't add something constructive to the conversation.

I was actually referring to this thread (15th post down) that stated waiters wear black dinner jackets on the 1st formal night and wear white dinner jackets on the 2nd formal night. I also see she sails mostly with Royal Caribbean and has no HAL sailings, and thus no experience with HAL. So my main intent was to see what Holland's policy was regarding this.

Please try to keep calm when someone politely asks you for another serving of Escargot !
