Vikstar Posted November 10, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 10, 2014 I have sailed out of the US and Europe but never from my home country Australia. Will the tipping on board on an AUS to NZ cruise still be in USD? For example, tips when getting room service?
tomatosauce Posted November 10, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 10, 2014 Even sailing out of Australia the onboard currency including for tips is in USD.
Ashland Posted November 10, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 10, 2014 Regardless of where an RCI ship sails it's always USD onboard.
TeamH Posted November 10, 2014 #4 Share Posted November 10, 2014 I got some US$ from an exchange place and then once onboard the casino changed them to singles for me, so yes US. The ATM onboard only gives out US$.

If the ship is cruising Australia the crew will take any currency and spend in ports. No need to change to USD.

They really don't spend so much ashore - even if they get ashore! Especially if everyone they are serving gives them Australian dollars, they'll have hundreds of dollars to spend ashore, all in a few hours. Not very realistic. Most passengers don't even spend that much ashore, aside from shore tours. USD is their standard currency, and much more transferable, especially for their home country. Do the respectful thing and give them the currency they work with.

Tip extra in which ever currency you please as long as its notes or .999 silver/Gold coins! It is a tip, none of the staff come from US so it doesnt matter if they change up US dollars or Australian Dollars. Why should you loose on exchanging AU to US? just give more or adequate AU There were no complaints from staff when the AU Dollar was buying $1.08 US.;) When cruising from USA I tip any extra over Auto/pre paid in US Dollars But if I sail from Australia I tip extra in AU, They wont refuse it thats for sure:)

I am sailing from Singapore to Sydney this month.I will have SGD and AUD.The crew will take tips in any currency and they have money change facility on board.I have no intention of getting USD and lose money changing back and forward between currencies. BekkaW Posted November 10, 2014 #10 Share Posted November 10, 2014 The automatic daily tips will be charged to your account in US$ but if you want to tip anything additional in cash then Oz$ is totally fine
Vikstar Posted November 10, 2014 Author #11 Share Posted November 10, 2014 Thanks all - I guess the down side with giving AUD is that the tips will quickly add up seeing it will be a $5 minimum. My tips are pre-paid however, I will still need to pay for room service.

The staff already get their tips from Auto,s and Pre paids! if you tip $5 per room service delivery per cabin capacity (2,3or4) thats not a lot? you dont have to tip per person for room service or even per person for drinks if you want to tip above any cruiseline added grat:) Dont get caught up in the cruise ship Tipping madness "BS" that doesnt really exist beyond cruisers imagination and forums;)

Sorry just to add! if you dont want to give $5 AU per room service per cabin just go to the casino and get enough $1 US notes for each room service tip you think you will need:)
The_Big_M Posted November 10, 2014 #14 Share Posted November 10, 2014 There were no complaints from staff when the AU Dollar was buying $1.08 US.;) Sure - because you're giving them 25% more!!! Who'd complain about a 25% pay rise? That well covers the extra commission costs.

There's a lot more origins that they're from than Indonesia!
