zeva1960 Posted December 10, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2014 I'm packing as we speak for NCL Breakaway on December 14/14 and my son is wondering if he should bring his ipad since I'm bringing mine and work off my hot spot when I purchase internet minutes on board. Does this work so we can save money on purchased minutes or does ge have to buy his own minutes?:D
Sauer-kraut Posted December 10, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 10, 2014 I can't really help you much with this but there are tech people over on the Norwegian Board that can help with this!! Cruise Lines A-O .... look for Norwegian ;D
Rare Keith1010 Posted December 10, 2014 #3 Share Posted December 10, 2014 Either way he could use your internet plan. I would post this on the NCL Board too. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=107 Keith

kitty9 Posted December 10, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2014 Internet is terribly slow, and expensive, so you may want to monitor a teen's Internet usage. Even with a package, you're paying about $.45 or more a minute. Most find that using the Internet on board a ship for entertainment or web surfing can wind up costing hundreds of dollars. And with speeds being so slow (think old fashioned dial up modem speed) surfing the net will eat up a lot of your purchased minutes. Most use Internet for email only, and very rarely for anything else.
zeva1960 Posted December 11, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted December 11, 2014 I know it's not the ideal place to surf so I've limited my son to how many minutes he can use. I use it to just post pics or check emails for work. Oh, and maybe splurge and watch a bit of Leaf games.....:D
cruisead Posted December 11, 2014 #7 Share Posted December 11, 2014 Since you're here on this new cruisers board, I assume you're a first time cruiser, so just to let you know, downloading photos can take forever. We used to try and download, but each pic took at least 10 minutes to download, so we don't bother anymore. It just took up too many minutes. dsrdsrdsr Posted December 15, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 15, 2014 You won't be able to watch video, the connection is too slow. Even if it wasn't, the chances are you wouldn't be allowed to monopolise such a large amount of bandwidth. I don't know NCL, but the chances are that you'll have to log in with your name, room number, and password, and if you're so minded you can give that password to your son and share the login that way. Though it might mean you can't log in both at the same time. If you go over time, depending on the system, it might log you out at once or it might let you continue at ruinous costs per minute. Check that before you start.
Steviewonder1 Posted December 15, 2014 #9 Share Posted December 15, 2014 Hot spots on Smart Phones work off the Cellular Data side which is then converted to WiFi, not taking Wifi and making it also a WiFi hot spot. The Cellular data will cost many times what buying a separate Wifi plan for the kid to use.
101wifi Posted December 22, 2014 #10 Share Posted December 22, 2014 I found the wifi on board our ship to be really slow. If you ask the crew where to find WiFi in your ports that would be a more reliable WiFi option usually. Our crew told us what ports had it or where to find it nearby the ports in bar or restaurants. We got lucky in Roatan and were able to lay on the Beach at Mahogany Bay and respond to needed emails and post our vacation photos.
