Last minute Jewel room selection

I recently booked the jewel 1/10/15 outside guarantee. I usually book RCCL way ahead and pick a cabin of my choosing, so this is a first for me. I couldn't pass up the $359pp price, especially when they also threw in the Ultimate Drink Package. Leaving out of Houston is great, as it's only a 4 hour drive for me, and gas is only 1.81/gallon down here in TX.

I was just assigned room 5070, which looks like it is a non-obstructed window cabin below 3 bars (I thought we would have a completely obstructed view or a small porthole ). Can anyone that has stayed on deck 5 on the starboard (right) side of a Jewel class ship under the 3 bars comment on the noise or lack of noise at night? Is cabin 5070 a good deal for an OX price?

Also - if I book OX (outside guarantee), can I call and request a room change?

Any input or advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Terry

Can't hep you with the room you were assigned as lowest category we have ever cruised in was category OK cabin on Pearl on deck 8.

What comes to changing cabins, you can always ask - but since the reason why guarantee cabin is cheaper is because you can't choose the cabin, your chances are slim to none. (NCL states that guarantee stateroom assignments are final.)

I have sailed the Jewel several times and have not stayed in this cabin, but can tell you a bit about the ship. The three bars above you are knows as bar city, a nice strip of three different types of bars in one place. Frequently there is music near the stairs. It is usually piano or guitar. Overall I would say the area is lively but not rowdy, like the clubs would be.

Usually a gty is not changeable once assigned, but it certainly has been done. I would call your TA and see what he says. Before calling carefully study the deck plans so you will be familiar with other cabins that might be available.

Good luck!

As the previous poster said, the area above is not likely to be an issue. The music in Bar City doesn't go on late into the evening. We had a cabin in that area on our first Jewel cruise several years ago and I don't recall any noise issues.

I would check prices on NCL's site 3 or 4 times a day at this point .

If prices drop more now you may be able to buy a sweet up grade for short money . ;)

Deck 5

******************** Warning ***

Some cabins on this deck with potential problems.

Deck 5 is right beneath several major public areas on the Norwegian Jewel, including the casino and the smaller main dining room. This could mean some noise issues for a select group of cabins. How staterooms are situated on Deck 5 reflects Norwegian Cruise Lines careful consideration of potential noise issues. For example, most cabins on Deck 5 are not under high traffic venues which are open into the wee hours. It is, consequently, possible to locate a quieter stateroom on Deck 5 of the Norwegian Jewel with some planning!

  • Forward on Deck 5 of the Norwegian Jewel, Oceanview Staterooms 5000 and 5500 are closest to the stage area, but have been arranged so that conference areas, and not the theater are directly above. There are likely no major issues with noise, and the cabins are also a bit oddly shaped and more spacious than average.
  • On Deck 5, exterior cabins 5528- 5550 port side and 5026- 5046 starboard are under the casino. Inside cabins in that area, 5039, 5041, 5049, 5051 and 5529- 5551 will likely be most affected. Noise issues from this area can occur after hours when many travelers are in their cabins on the Norwegian Jewel. If you are light sleeper, you may prefer to find a cabin elsewhere on the ship, bring earplugs, or invest in a wave machine (a sound device available at a specialty retailer like Brookstone -- produces pleasant sounds that can wipe out the unpleasant sounds).
  • Port side, inside cabins 5049- 5071 and Oceanview Staterooms 5048- 5070 are generally under bar areas. Again, we suggest looking for a stateroom elsewhere, bringing along ear plugs, or investing in a wave machine for light sleepers.
  • Aft on Deck 5 of the Norwegian Jewel, Oceanview Staterooms 5580- 5588 port side and 5086- 5094 starboard, and interior cabin 5581 are under the general area of the smaller main dining room. There could be noise during dining hours and during the clean-up after each meal. For dinner, the last diners usually exit by 10:30 and there is likely to some noise from the clean-up (vacuum cleaners) as late as 11:30. Given that most people don't get back to their cabins to after 11 PM, this shouldn't be a substantial issue. Breakfast typically starts in the main dining room at 7:00 AM, so you might hear some noise above starting then. However, few people go to the main dining room for breakfast, so, this should not be a major issue.
  • Some of the worst cabins on the Norwegian Jewel are on Deck 5. While we are not suggesting that this deck be avoided, you will find quieter cabin areas on higher decks!

My dh and I were on deck 5 on the Jewel last summer. We liked it. Inside cabin 5081. Absolutely no noise issues to report, except for twice when some excited young kids went running by giggling.

I loved our sideways room, first room around the corner of the stairs.

I will report back and let you know if we have any issues (#5070)!!!
