Has anybody ever used these for ports in the Caribbean & have you found them helpful for planning excursions on your own rather than HAL's shore excursions?

My answer to your question is no. However you might find this thread deleted since AAA is a travel agency and discussion of travel agencies is prohibited on Cruise Critics

There are a number of guidebooks which focus specifically on Caribbean ports-of-call, e.g. "Fodors Caribbean Cruise Ports of Call". Our library carries a few titles and so might yorus. Also, you can find even more titles on Amazon. Any of those will have more useful information for planning excursions than will a AAA guidebook.

Also, I have always found lots of information in the Cruise Critic Ports of Call forum about non-ships excursions. In fact, one of the highlights of our recent Western Caribbean cruise was the sailing/snorking trip we did in Roatan which I found here on CC.
