sidari Posted February 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Tonight I recorded a cruise show put out in the UK by a well known travel agent, a New show goes out every month and is repeated several times during the month on Sky channel 256. Having just watched the show they mentioned that there are more ships on the way with a total of 7 being ordered, it will of course be interesting to see how many of which of the new ships already known about are to be ordered. If they wanted to expand... wouldn't it be easier for them to just buy NCL. There seems to be too much expansion in the cruise industry. This won't end well. Yeah and they may be glad to welcome us solo, passengers back like they did post credit crunch! Not sure the idea of these behemoths appeals to me but it will hopefully create excess capacity on the smaller older ships which are to my liking especially Musica class. We also prefer the smaller ships, especially since they can access the smaller more exotic ports. Recently sailed ms Amsterdam, a caribbean nine island sailing which Divina could never touch. Even though the larger ships can offer a greater selection of entertainment, we still prefer the intimacy of the smaller ships.

Most household in the UK are singleton. I imagine the trend is in this direction for much of the wealthy World. Why would I choose to share a toilet, shower and bedroom with someone when on a 'luxury' holiday? If they had any sense, MSC would be designing-in solo cabins on the new builds to meet this demand. The problem is that a single requires pretty much the same amount of room as a couple. Hence the single supplement. In fact if you want to get narky, a single offers half the add-on and gambling revenue of a couple. Better than nothing in a cabin, but worse than a couple... (and half the opportunity to sell excursions to) Edited February 10, 2015 by insanedan
sidari Posted February 10, 2015 Author #14 Share Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) "In fact if you want to get narky, a single offers half the add-on and gambling revenue of a couple" Only if they gamble, Same goes for Drinking or Excursions! plus they only take up half the space of a couple. In fact if you want to get narky, a single offers half the add-on and gambling revenue of a couple. Better than nothing in a cabin, but worse than a couple... (and half the opportunity to sell excursions to) First, I am never "narky". Second, maximising profit is not as simple as maximising guests per unit volume on board. The spending profile of solo travellers is understandanbly different to that of couples and families. They are more likely to be spending money socialising and doing things than a couple are. Third, there is also a cost per person carried in fuel, service, food, etc. plus the space that person occupies to the detriment of others, it is not simply the revenue of fare + onboard spend. Fourth, it is a design challange to produce space-efficient solo cabins but one that has hardly been addresed thus far. Finally, "Hence the single supplement". If you had been single and checked, you would have known that most MSC cruises are not bookable by solo travellers at any price. There is no supplement option. Solo travellers are not welcome except if they lie and pretend to be a couple. Hardly a solo-friendly welcome. sidari Posted February 10, 2015 Author #16 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Hi Tim ... I know you did the Canaries last year but there are some decent single fares being offered on the Armonia including flights by a travel agent who have an Eskimos house as their company name.
