Cruising with Grandkids

We are doing a short 4 day Mexico cruise out of LA with our 2 grandsons. I have their birth certificates. What else do I need for them to travel.

For the passport people, they have expired passports and we will not be renewing them prior to the cruise.

I did a cruise recently with my daughter and her daughter, and we were told that since both parents were not on the cruise, my granddaughter would have to have a passport, that just the birth certificate would not work. Granted, Princess reps tell you all kinds of stuff, but we took her word for it and made sure there was a passport. Maybe you should double check.

Princess requires minors to possess a passport if there is only one adult traveling with the child. Here's the relevant information:

PASSPORT REQUIREMENT WHEN MINORS TRAVEL WITH ONE ADULT ON VOYAGES GOVERNED BY THE U.S. WESTERN HEMISPHERE TRAVEL INITIATIVE (includes travel within BERMUDA, CANADA, CARIBBEAN, HAWAII, MEXICO, PANAMA CANAL, UNITED STATES) When minors are traveling with only one adult 21 years of age or older, Princess requires that all passengers must be in possession of a valid passport. We have implemented this requirement because we want to ensure that your party remains together should an emergency arise that requires one or more in your party to be disembarked in a non-U.S. port. We cannot guarantee that all members of your party will be allowed to disembark with just a WHTI-compliant document or birth certificate. Failure to present a valid passport for all passengers traveling together will result in denial of boarding without refund of the of the cruise or cruisetour fare.

Since it sounds like there will be two adults traveling with the minor children, you should be fine, but if you have ANY question about it, you should contact Princess.

As mentioned, you will need a Power of Attorney from both parents giving you authorization to travel with the minor children and you will need a Medical Power of Attorney from both parents giving you authorization to make medical decisions. Here is a good sample form which incorporates both Powers of Attorney. Note: BOTH parents must sign (even if they are divorced) and the document must be notarized. If the parents are divorced, just make two copies of this document--one for each to sign and have notarized.

Agree about the note but we have never been asked anyplace in the world.

It wasn't on Princess, but we definitely were asked for the notes, on RCI. We were cruising with 7 grandkids and they very carefully matched up all the birth certificates and parental permission forms with each child.

Last November our group sailed on a Golden 3 day to a Ensenada. One of the gals traveled with her GD7 she had the appropriate notarized notes for travel and the child's BC.

San Pedro never asked for her parent notes.

Anybody over the age of 15 (16+) needs a valid ID. Before our DDs had passports they used state issued ID thru the DMV.

I'll be traveling with my 13 year old GD on a British Isles cruise in July. She will have a passport, but if I understand this thread, I will also need a notarized letter from her parents giving authorization for her to travel with me and for me to get medical care for her if needed. Anything else that we need to be prepared for?

We have traveled often with our niece and we made sure we had her passport, birth certificate, notarized letter signed by both parents and a list of numbers where her parents could be reached. We were asked a couple of times for these items.

It's a good idea to have the proper IDs, the notarized letters (with signatures of both parents), the medical release form, the phone number of the pediatrician, a photocopy of the medical insurance card, even the usual dosages of standard meds (Tylenol, for example) for each kid, just in case.

Our GD is traveling with us in May. We have gotten her passport, travel permission form and medical permission form, but the teen center paperwork also requires a parent's signature if she plans to use it.

Forms are available from the Princess website...

I went to Alaska with 2 grandkids (10 and 12) in 2013 and it was wonderful. The kids program paperwork can be done on board no problem. I also added to the permission papers the total time frame of travel home to home to include authorizing and escorting them flying, in hotel, on excursions, etc. to cover as much as possible. Will be going again this year with my daughter and 2 grandkids also 10 and 12. We're so lucky to spend this time with them. Have a great trip.

Really looking forward to it as we will be celebrating her 13th birthday and it will be her first cruise and first trip abroad. She's our oldest grandchild, so maybe starting a new tradition😀

On RCI, the kid's center and various activities such as the climbing wall and ice rink also required all the paperwork to sign the kids up. Took a while with seven!
