HOHO Bus in Malta

Recommended Posts

We are debating between the north and south route. Do we want to see Mdina (north route) or Tarxien Temples, Vittoriosa and Marsaxlokk (south route)? I know this is somewhat subjective and a matter of personal choice but since we haven't been there before, just wondered if anyone had a preference. I know we can do both but we also want to have some time to spend in Valletta. We are in port until 6:00.

Any reason to get tickets in advance?

If you want to go to Mdina then you would save money by simply taking the local bus rather then paying for the HoHo. We have friends that love the HoHo's and they enjoyed both routes, but they just stay on the bus and ride around the island. The problem with the HoHo's are that they do not run often enough for those that want to make frequent hop offs. They usually only run once every 30 minutes. So while we think the routes are a great way to view the island from a bus, they are not always the best way to really explore various spots on the island. For that, we prefer to simply rent a car and drive ourselves. With a car we do not waste time waiting for the next bus :). We really enjoy driving around the island (especially in some of the coastal areas) as it is a picturesque area.

On the other hand, driving in town is a challenge because of all the narrow one-way streets. A GPS is really helpful.

Regarding Mdina, this is a place where you might want to spend some significant time (at least 2 hours).

  • 2 weeks later...

We took the Red HOHO bus and we were able to do both the North and South routes. We only got off at Mdina on one and the Blue Grotto on the other.

A couple of things:

The Blue and Red bus are not the same company even though they told us at the dock (by the red bus rep).

The blue bus broke down and everyone got stranded for few hours the week when we were there.

They have signs for water on the bus but ran out, so bring your own.
