OK, That's it!

I agree. Almost everyone, myself included, has fancy sig lines. While those sig lines may not reside on the same servers as the posts, they still have to be downloaded. That takes up bandwidth on both ends.
Yes, but not on the Cruise Critic end. Once you've been sent the text for the link by CC (not very many bytes), the subsequent transactions necessary to pick up the fancy graphics for the sig lines are between your computer and another server owned by another company. That wouldn't be causing all of the .php timeouts we've been getting on the CC server itself.

Further, I have to believe that most users have their caching set to the default setting as installed, so the smiley faces should already be resident on most users machines after the first view, and not require repetitive downloading.

I keep asking myself what graphics keep changing on a typical .php page here enough to cause them to be downloaded frequently...

From the Jelsoft (vBulletin) board of September 9:

Version 3.0.9 remedies various problems identified in 3.0.8, in particular a problem with Internet Explorer freezing while posting a message, and an issue relating to the mailqueue failing to send digest email notifications.

Canderson, thanks SO much for posting this. We received NO notification from Jelsoft regarding this upgrade so we're going to take care of this today! Funny, too, how the majority of our problems coincided with the LAST upgrade which was back in late July early August.

The new behaviors did seem to be tied to the .8 point release, especially the Submit weirdness. Glad to have helped.

Not that I'm into high heels, but what's a "Stiletto Stomp Cruise"?;)

All I want to say is, if this upgrade solves this problem for all of us, we owe one huge debt of gratitude to Canderson. I am so impressed by C's knowledge about this sort of thing. I admit I didn't have a clue about any of it.

Many of us sit around and complain a lot (me incuded) and just don't have the knowledge or expertise to even begin to figure out what the problem might be or how we could he.

I had read a very long explanation about why it had nothing to do with the avatars, signature graphics, etc., so I turned everything back on. There had been no difference with it all turned off. Clearly that was not the problem.

So if this upgrade does the trick, I hope we can all think of a way to sound a resounding cheer for Canderson!!!:D

A "company cruise" of sorts, my hosts and I are sailing on Grand Princess together in January (before you all start doing the happy dance, we're bringing laptops ). The Stilettos refer to an inside joke of many moons ago.

It is unlikely that the "Submit Reply" problem has a common root with the "white screen" problem, so don't get your hopes up about that part of the problem... but hey, we could get lucky. This should get rid of the problem where your browser gets hung up when you try to post a message, though.

All of a sudden, I am able to bring things up really quickly on these boards. Up until now, it has been very slow, as people have described. The only thing I did differently - and I have no clue whether this should make a difference or not - is that I went into my browswer's "Internet Options" under Tools, and deleted my cookies and my temperary internet files (this is under the tab labeled General) and is for IE only. I can tell you this - it took a long time for my PC to delete all my temp internet files. And I have a fairly fast and new machine.

This always helps if you haven't done it for awhile. But it's in no way the crux of this problem. I clean up all that stuff at least once a month.

I've found this site running a lot better the last 2 days. Could be there are just a lot of people not bothering for awhile because it's been so hard. I know a lot of people who have gone somewhere else, but it doesn't measure up to this site (IMHO:o ).

All of these cached "temporary internet files" are indexed by Windows and aren't (and haven't been for some time) really individual files, but even at that, a huge database of cached "files" can take a fair bit of time to access.

What you're describing indicates that you don't have enough horsepower on your computer to support a cache (database) of the size you're supporting without an unacceptable (to you) level of performance hit. The objective of the cache, afterall, is to avoid pulling things across the net that you can keep local copies of on your machine instead. When this 'get it from our own cache' process is taking longer than it takes to get the same data over the net, you know you've got some serious binary constipation going on due to a cache that for whatever reason is more than your machine can handle.

While you're there deleting all of the old stuff, you may wish to avoid getting back into this same situation -- consider lowering your overall cache size to something that doesn't take your machine weeks to search once it reaches its full allowed size.

Tools / Internet Options / General / Temporary Internet Files / Settings / ... and set the amount of disk space you'll ask it to use to something about 1/2 the size you have now. If this problem occurs again, you may wish to consider setting to about 1/2 again in the future etc until you've found an index+database size that is a) more reasonable for your browsing habits, and b) more reasonable for your CPU/disk controller/disk to search.

What is weird. I have not had any problems with the boards. I have cable Internet if that makes any difference? I also use Netscape.
Cable, LAN, Dialup -- it'll all have been the same. If you've been on here through various times of day for the last couple of months, you must have encountered the slow screen loads and the occasional blank white screen?!

Having surfed through the last CC crisis with the former board-hosting service, it is painful to see this happening all over again.

Laura, I hope you negotiated a good SLA (Service Level Agreement) with this host - and that you're collecting on it. And Jelsoft, your product is earning a few hundred thousand bad references here - please put your best people on it, right away.

I admit I know zero about these things, but there is the possibility that it has something to do with your location. I see you live in Washington state. I know someone from Ohio also had no problem. But you are the only 2 posters in the last few months who have said that.

It certainly has nothing to do with your connection, but it could be if there are less people accessing the server in your area, there would be fewer problems? Maybe one of the technies can advise.

so I have no adware or spam problems since there are no cookies to feast on. But when I hit SEND on a reply I can hang up clothes for a load of laundry come back up 2 floors to the office & it stil hasn't gone thru. SO I hit it again, get the little counter & then I get the block telling me I have dup posts. And that is 7AM-10AM usually. When I log in it takes a while til all is left of center to access. At least the white screen left.

We're at 3.0.9 now, so it will be interesting to see which problems disappear and which remain.

I realize that they are still working on the problems of CC but once in awhile I still do get the famous white screen and have lost a post already.

marilyn

Yes, the white screens continue. But so far, I haven't had the browser lock up completely when hitting "Submit Reply". It was happening about once every other day for a while.
