PhotoMan Posted April 2, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2004 Hello, fellow Princess cruisers. Anybody else aboard this sailing. What did you think? My wife and I loved it. It was our 4th with Princess. They are great! Here are a few pics from a great week aboard the Dawn. Rare Coral Posted April 2, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 2, 2004 You must be a professional photographer! I am guessing from your screen name that you are. These are some of the best Caribbean pictures I have ever seen! Congrats on some awesome pics - your angle on some of these is extremely impressive! What type of camera are you using? Thanks for sharing.

PhotoMan Posted April 2, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 2, 2004 Thank you Coral! Yes, I am a professional, hence I never leave work, even on vacation! I used digital slr models, Kodak 14N and Canon 10D. I used the Canon 10D about 75% of the time. I like it better. Carlos

PhotoMan Posted April 2, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted April 2, 2004 The Dawn is a great ship. Make sure and go to the baths in Tortola. They are amazing. Also, you can save nearly $100 booking locally instead of throught the cruise line. We went via Smith's Ferry. They had the best price. Have a great time on the ship. I sure wish I could be on it! CaribbeanCrazy Posted April 6, 2004 #14 Share Posted April 6, 2004 PhotoMan, There has been talk recently regarding some mechanical problems on the Dawn...possibly with the Thrusters. Did you notice any problems or hear anything in this regards? Was there any mention of the ship going into Dry dock? BTW...Nice Pictures Do you have any of the Dawn? Preferbly interior shots. We will be sailing to Alaska on her in mid May. Did you do PCD? If so, did you make reservations or just show up? Thanks CaribbeanCrazy
PhotoMan Posted April 6, 2004 Author #15 Share Posted April 6, 2004 CaribbeanCrazy, We sailed on the 14th of March on the Dawn. We did notice that in Tortola we arrived an hour late for some reason. My wife and I, nor our friends heard any explanation while aboard the ship. But I have become very interested as to what happened, as I believe we may have been on the sailing with the malfunctioning thrusters. I will look at my photo files for photos of the interior of the ship. Carlos
joyus Posted April 6, 2004 #16 Share Posted April 6, 2004 Wonderful pictures - we're out looking for a camera to take on our cruise to Alaska. Forgive my ignorance, but are your cameras digital? What's the pixel? What kind of card did you use? Did you download pics while on the ship?
PhotoMan Posted April 7, 2004 Author #17 Share Posted April 7, 2004 Joyus, Yes, my cameras are digital. They are digital SLR's.On this particular trip I used a Canon 10D and on occassion a Kodak 14N. They are 6 megapixel and 13.7 megapixels, repectivly. They use compact flash cards, and no, I didn't download them while aboard the ship. I did resize the images (Digital SLR's make large files) for quicker viewing. Canon now makes a Digital Rebel for under $1000, as does Nikon. (D70) They would both be great cameras for a cruise. And I recommend either. Hope this helps, PhotoMan
gopher's girl Posted April 7, 2004 #18 Share Posted April 7, 2004 PhotoMan - Awesome pictures. I have a Canon G5 that I plan to take on my cruise next week. Any tips for getting great shots?
JanC Posted April 7, 2004 #19 Share Posted April 7, 2004 PhotoMan, GREAT photos!! So beautiful... This is kind of off the subject, but I would like to ask you a question. I am an amateur (very, LOL) photographer and I like to enter contests. I have a great 4mp camera, however, a lot of photo contests do not allow digital. So now I am back to looking for a 35mm. For under $200. Any suggestions? WooHoo, cruisin' again in May 2004!
PhotoMan Posted April 7, 2004 Author #20 Share Posted April 7, 2004 gopher's girl, The G5 is a good camera. You should get some great shot with it. To get the best possible shots learn everything you can about you camera in the instruction manuel. I know it sounds kinda of silly, but almost every week I refer to my manuel. Before you go on your cruise learn how to set you camera for different situations. Here are a couple tips, (not set in stone, as everyone does things a little different.) 1. Use you camera at the highest image quality setting and learn to use it the the "M" mode. Stay away from the "automated" modes. 2. Outside, and especially in the Caribbean, use a polarizing filter. Take advantage of those blue skies and the blue water. A polarizer will put the pop in your colors. (I remove it for night shots, however, as you lose nearly a stop with it on.) 3. If you can't master the "M" mode, just shot in the Av mode or P mode. Just don't forget to set you ISO according to your conditions.(very important) 4.Use your flash in the daytime when possible. Too many times do I see photos where the subjects almost look like walking shadows. The flash will get rid of black eyes (shadows under the eye sockets, dark faces under ball caps, etc.) and add a little pop to your photos. Just a few tips, Carlos
