last year when I bought them they were a paper certificate only good to pay on the cruise. This time they are gift cards which I assume you can use for anything??

Yes, I've done that on my past 3 cruises. You have to take the certificates or cards to guest services to have them applied to your S&S account. Have fun!

mom2dea, if you have Verizon, you can sign up for their Smart Rewards program online. Then you can use your points to purchase gift cards (and other items) at a discount. The Carnival ones are 10% off $100 (so you pay $90) or $500 (you pay $450). The gift cards can be used for pretty much anything from paying off your cruise to your onboard account. They sell out super fast.

They are easy to use on board for your S&S card. Just go to GS and they will put it on for you, so whatever you charge (like cheers) will be paid for.
