GirlyCruiser Posted May 18, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 18, 2015 Hi can anyone help me please? I am trying to get insurance cover for my cruise having just found out I will not be covered with my current insurer due to me having gallstones. I have 2 quotes from compare the market.com for £347 & £524 but surely it's not going to cost as much as that! I have just tried cover for you.com again and going through their website it now says they won't cover me. Any ideas on who I can go to for insurance thats not going to cost hundreds of pounds? I am worried now as we sail in just under six weeks. many thanks, Sam.

chrisg1uk Posted May 18, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2015 I am having similar issues (different illness) and have been all over the place. The best I have found is allclear travel.
Thejuggler Posted May 18, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 18, 2015 We go away in a couple of weeks, not a cruise, two weeks ago a family member was diagnosed with gallstones, with no symptons. Called the insurance and it was added with no increase in premium, this is LV.
cruiseluvva Posted May 18, 2015 #5 Share Posted May 18, 2015 I think if you're awaiting surgery you are lucky to have found anyone to cover you at all. There is an increased risk of Cholecystitis which can be very nasty indeed, so I can understand the reluctance to cover you. Good luck - both with your gall stones and finding acceptable insurance for the cruise.

GirlyCruiser Posted May 18, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted May 18, 2015 Thank you everyone, I have been relatively symptom free since the end of March after changing my diet (having as little fat as possible). I will try a few others but I have also quickly emailed the insurer back to tell them not to cancel my cover after first telling them to cancel it. I have my consultation on Wednesday to hopefully get a surgery date, fingers crossed my health continues to be ok for the foreseeable future. jeanlyon Posted May 18, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 18, 2015 I did 5 quotes for our two conditions. I have diverticular disease and my OH has atrial fibrillation and high BP. the best of all was Staysure.
Ergates The Ant Posted May 24, 2015 #10 Share Posted May 24, 2015 Hi there, Try Staysure, although be aware that they would not cover me for any trips while awaiting surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, hardly a life threatening condition. It is more to do with whether you are on a hospital waiting list or not. I wouldn't bother going through Internet 'supermarket' type website, but do a search for specialist insurance for pre existing conditions. Good luck. jeanlyon Posted May 24, 2015 #11 Share Posted May 24, 2015 Insure and Go is also very good.
silversurf Posted May 24, 2015 #12 Share Posted May 24, 2015 I would always check out insurance before I book any holiday, including a cruise and take it out immediately after booking; you never know when you might need to cancel and want your deposit back. Of course it depends on your age and where you are going; because of my COPD I am excluded from going to the Americas or Caribbean, also Australia, New Zealand or Hong Kong as the insurance price is prohibitive. However Europe, Africa and the Far and Middle East are reasonable. I have found Saga (if you are over 50) are a fair price and cover a lot of eventualities. Make sure you tell your insurance company that this is cruise insurance. Also check that 'free' insurance with your bank would cover medical conditions and also if there is an age restriction. Be aware that if you are travelling with family or friends and have insurance with different companies you may not be covered to stay with them overseas if one of you had an accident or illness. In other words check, check and check again. You need to be fully covered before you book.
shallwe Posted May 24, 2015 #13 Share Posted May 24, 2015 Also check that 'free' insurance with your bank would cover medical conditions and also if there is an age restriction. We have 'free' insurance with the Nationwide. I declared out medical conditions to the insurance company and was covered immediately without any extra charge. They also cover us for cruises as well. But Silversurf if completely correct, check with them to be on the safe side.
dsrdsrdsr Posted May 24, 2015 #14 Share Posted May 24, 2015 (edited) There's a good bit of missing information that would affect the cost.. How old are you? Where are you going? How long is the cruise? £350 might be a tremendous bargain, or it might be unreasonably high. Impossible to tell. I'd have thought, since you're on a waiting list for an operation, that it's pretty cheap. Edited May 24, 2015 by dsrdsrdsr
bertie1992 Posted May 25, 2015 #15 Share Posted May 25, 2015 We had "free" Insurance without bank and after my husband's stroke I didn't believe he would be covered, however when I called them because we had booked the cruise prior to him having to stroke we were covered and the following year too So if your gallstones were diagnosed after you booked this would be the same
