shepp Posted June 8, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2015 (edited) Oh dear. After years of ranting about the decline in dress codes, I find myself in a quandary. On an upcoming Japan cruise, I'll find my luggage space constrained because of what I understand about limits on stowing bags on bullet trains, which I'll be taking pre- and post-cruise. (The shipping-luggage-ahead option won't work with my travel schedule.) So, much as I'd like to schlep a jacket and dress shoes along, I've gone out and bought a nice embroidered black guayabera and oatmeal linen pants. The outfit looks very spiffy, but would only be regarded as formalwear in a limited number of countries, and I ain't Cuban. And I assume that Japanese dress standards are different from Americans'. Question for those who've sailed around Japan: Will that get me into the MDR on formal nights without too many icy stares? GarySuzy Posted June 8, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 8, 2015 We did this cruise last year and I just took a nice long sleeve dress shirt and tie and wore them to the dining room. No stares or comments were received.

The guayabera is worn w/o a tie, of course, and I suppose it depends on the maitre d', but this is one occasion I'm glad the dress code is spottily enforced. Love em but it would look corny with a tie.

If I can get away with the linen guayabera look, I'll somehow find a way to forgive myself. At least it's not a Hawaiian shirt and Dockers. Maybe I should start a crowd-funding page?
