Land-based cell coverage in the Mediterranean

Recommended Posts

We're on the Allure sailing out of Barcelona on the 21st. This will be our first Mediterranean cruise. Let me ask a newbie question: When we're out of port, will the ship sometimes be traveling close enough to shore that we might pick up some cell towers from the land?

(I know that the ship has its own satellite-based data service to offer.)

Many thanks.

Matt

Not really - you'll get snippets from time to time, but generally you'll be too far out for mobile reception. As you come in to port and leaving again in the evening you'll get some for a while, but I wouldn't count on having it all evening.

There were times when you would have land based cell coverage, espically while following the coast. Sometimes I would forget to shut off cellular data when we returned back to the ship and after a few hours, or less, at sea it would switch to ship coverage. Once I got the text that my phone switched to ship coverage I would remember to shut off the data until we returned to land.
