DIY Vesuvius and Pompei logistics

We are going to be in Naples from 8:00 to 19:00 on July 31st (Divina). Could anyone who has done Vesuvius and Pompei on their own help with how to do it most efficiently? Thanks!

The most efficient way to get to both in one day requires a car - is that in the consideration set or are you only looking for public transit information?

No, we don't feel comfortable driving a car in Italy, we'd rather use public transportation.

But what about a car service, or a taxi?

Strictly by mass transit there are two options.

 

You can go to Pompei and take a bus from Pompei to Vesuvio and back.

 

Or you can go to Ercolano Scavi (on the Circumvesuviana train line) and take the Vesuvio Express bus/van service to Vesuvio and back.

 

There's no way by public transit to be efficient and go directly from one to the other, you need to do a round trip to Vesuvio from one of these two locations.

We used Rome in a Limo who were fantastic - shared with a family on the ship to save money. Air con Mercedes vans were a God send!

We had planned on using this company to visit Vesuvius last summer:http://www.busviadelvesuvio.com pickup is near the entrance to Pompeii. The plan was to take the SITA bus to Pompeii and then this bus to Vesuvius.

 

Our plans changed due to very cloudy weather, but we still had a fabulous day with Plan B.
