hotel krasnapolsky

Recommended Posts

Kras is right on Dam square in a busy section of town.

It is an older well known hotel.

There are or were renovations going on, so I donot know if that will be ready when you arrive.

DH used to be night manager at Kras, but that was some time ago.

The rooms come in all shapes and sizes and there are 400+ of them, so it is difficult to give you a general answer about rooms. Some wings are newer, some rooms have laminate flooring, some have fairly old bathrooms, very few have a direct view of the royal palace (generally the more expensive ones). It is a grand old hotel which has been extended and refurbished many times, with all the pros and cons of such a majestic old hotel.

You are definitely in the centre of things, but if that is the "things" you want or are looking for is something else. It is very close to the royal palace, Kalverstraat shopping street, Red Light District, Anne Frank House, Madame Tussauds, etc. If you like restaurants and bars, Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein areas are very good as well, if it is museums you want, the Museum district around the American Consulate and Concertbuilding may be more to your taste. Amsterdam is compact, and everything is walkable or reachable by tram.

Just back from Amsterdam.

As other replies, that hotel is in the heart of the city. Too much in the heart for them, ditto for me. Fronts a very busy square, very busy streets around.

To the east of it, & up almost as far as Centraal station is the Red Light district.

To the north, Damrak runs up to centraal station and is also busy - the main tourist are is between Dam Square & centraal station, and almost all canal boats run from near centraal station.

To the west (eg along Herengratch) is only a five minute walk and a much more peaceful & scenic base.

Canal houses converted to hotels & apartments are attractive and quintessentially "Amsterdam" but room sizes tend to be small & stairs steep.

We stayed in an apartment which had those characteristics, on Brauersgracht which is quiet yet very convenient. Loved the place and the location.

I think you'll find that most hotel rooms in Amsterdam, even purpose built hotels, are small. Your hotel is different, as per the UK exile's post the rooms are varied. http://www.booking.com quotes superior doubles at 323 sq ft - very generous by Amsterdam standards.

BTW, we did two canal tours & I'd recommend both. The €9 hour-long trip (not widely advertised) as great value for money, and the smaller electric-powered open boats operated by Eco-Tours (€18.50 & lasts 75 mins) which are more personal & go down canals impossible for their bigger brothers who charge around €16- 17 for a frequently glassed-in goldfish-bowl experience.

Plenty of snack eats & drinks everywhere, but for a much less touristy dinner try the (former) Jewish quarter of Jordaan.
