cocowills Posted July 9, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Going on Eclipse around the med, any info on shuttle bus etc would be helpful We are visiting Malage, Lisbon, Gibraltar , Genoa, can we do our own things at these port, or do we need to a trip. We visit the port for Rome, but we don't want to go to Rome, anything close by or is it easier to spend the day on ship. Thanks

Our experience of main stream cruise lines, is that very rarely are shuttle buses provided. It's always difficult deciding whether to take a ship tour (often expensive) against a diy trip, but often with very little time in port, a lot of time can be wasted just trying to work out where you are and what best to see, so my advice would be to take a tour on your first visit, even on a HoHo bus, then you will have a good idea if and where you'd like to spend more time. In Gibraltar. I like to go and see the apes, which you can do on your own or in a minibus island tour. In Rome, we always catch the local train, which is very good value for money, as the ticket includes local transport in Rome. The crew tend to visit a local water park. Thanks It sounds like you're on the same cruise as us (Eclipse's only Med cruise this year) - join the Roll call and there will be several who can answer your questions. Briefly - Gibralter is very small - the town is a short walk from the ship, at the edge of port there were taxis offering trips. Lisbon depends where we dock but again is only a few hundred yards from the city (mind your belongings here). Malaga where we docked is quite a way from the port entrance (which is very close to the city) but a cheap shuttle was available, some walked. Genoa we docked near to a metro station one stop from the main station - not sure how easy it was to walk as we took a trip. Villefranche - tender port - but very easy to do it yourself, once on land - walk along the sea front for a couple of hundred yards and you come to the railway station just above you. Trains going to the left go towards Nice and Antibes (Nice is about 10 mins by train) Trains going to the right go to toward Monaco (again a short train ride) Livorno (for Florence) and Cittivechia (for Rome) there is probably less to do near the port and you need to plan on trips

Rare English Tim Posted July 11, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 11, 2015 How easy is it to see the apes without using the cable car Very easy, they are all over the area, with a long winding road, zig-zagging the hillside. We took cable car up and walked down, thus being able to take our time, as opposed to using a taxi tour (12 people taxis).
CathyCruises Posted July 11, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 11, 2015 How easy is it to see the apes without using the cable car We saw them frolicking in the trees downtown by the cemetery. Which is a very cool place by itself, recommend it!
ShipsDoc46 Posted July 15, 2015 #8 Share Posted July 15, 2015 Malaga provides a shuttle bus from the Port Authority at a couple of Euros return ,cannot remember how much but certainly not expensive .Gibraltar and Genoa ,just get off and walk all easy ( unless dissabled of course )
TeaBag Posted July 15, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 15, 2015 Beware of the apes while wearing anything loose! They will take your hat or your scarf in the blink of an eye and entertain all, wearing it! They are very cute. We loved Gibraltar.
