What was your original cabin, and what is your VIFP status?

I don't think it matters my first cruise we got bumped from a normal inside to one with French doors. Our 2nd cruise we had an OV and got a call for a suite on the fantasy. We declined. My best Is a cruise this fall. Booked a handicap cabin on the advice of my pvp, and within s week I got bumped to a cove.:D

The past couple of times for me it has been an upsell e-mail rather than a call. If you were interested, the e-mail had an extension to call. I'm sure it is a much more efficient use of their time this way. I have mostly declined the offers but they offered what I thought was a very reasonable price to go from an 8E balcony to a grand suite a few cruises ago. That was the only one I've taken.

Not sure if this was to me since I did say we were in a obstructed balcony. We were on maybe our 6th cruise, so probably Gold. I got the feeling the rep was calling names on a list till the cabin sold. She gave us a few minutes to decide and we accepted. We'd never had a higher catagory than a balcony previously.

Nope. Trust me, I have tried, and I'm a good negotiator

Same here - the one (and only) time they called!

I always wondered if I got a good deal or not when we were offered the Owner's Suite on Ecstacy for $2500 additional (5 day cruise) plus our already fully paid balcony fares. There were 3 of us, wife and I and elderly father-in-law. Apparently you got a better deal.

We got our only upsell call 5 days before sailing in a GS on Fantasy. There were 4 of us, and they offered the Owner's Suite for an additional $1800 on top of the GS price we had paid. Asked if they could lower the price - NO. They called back 3 days later with same offer. Countered again - NO. Someone was definitely in that suite when we sailed - we checked! Must have gotten a better offer, or had more expendible cash than us!!:D

As far as I can figure the price they offer you depends on what you paid so far. I say this because we got offered an up sell from balcony to ocean suite and thought it was an ok price and took it. I asked if my son and wife could have same deal and she said they were on their list and they could have the same upgrade for less...reason being they paid more for their balcony than we did...

Oftentimes an upsell call is made because the "original" cabin can be easily resold...and the cheaper the original cabin the more likely the upsell call. Cruiselines would rather have their "cheap" cabins go unsold as it gets closer to the date of sailing. This way they "loose" less money on pack and go rates.

Also, if you have an connecting door and not the adjoining cabin these cabins are often targeted for upsells because TAs or Carnival reps have someone looking for connecting rooms.

If the cabin you already has is in a prime location you might get an upsell call. Also if you have the top tier of your particular room type you may get an upsell call if the category sells out...new bookers may want an OV but don't necessarily want to book on a balcony.

Upsells are rarely made to those having guaranteed cabins.

Just want to be prepared if I ever get a call

My upcoming cruise will be my 6th with Carnival. I love Carnival and hope to be a stockholder soon. I have never received a "upsell" call nor the "casino free cruise call". Makes me wonder what the criteria is. Whether it is random or how much you spend on the casino and/or other things like excursions/photos, etc . They do know how much you spend via the usage of the S & S card.

The (what-I-though-was) relatively cheap upsell we took to the grand suite was from a guarantee balcony.

I did have what most people would think of as a less obstructed view than most other obstructed balconies. Our balcony on Ecstacy was "obstructed" by a small, Zodiac-type (rubber tubes around a rigid floor) of life boat, using an outboard motor, rather than the full-size fiberglass covered orange monsters blocking the other balconies.
