Discover Card Insurance Benefits changing for trip taken (not booked) after Aug 1

Recommended Posts

I just received an email that Discover is changing benefits if you paid for your trip with a discover card. If would be for a loss that occurs after Aug 1. It doesn't matter when you paid

Here is the message:

Your Discover card's built - in benefits are streamlining on August 1, 2015

At Discover, we want you to be happy. That's why periodically review the valuable benefits that are built in to your Discover card. We have decided to retain some benefits - like purchase protection and price protection - and discontinue others.

What this means for you:

Effective August 1, 2015 Discover card will discontinue the following benefits: 24/7 Travel Assistance, Baggage Delay Insurance, MyConcierge, Travel Delay, Lost Luggage, and Emergency Roadside Assistance. If you have a loss or incident that occurs on or after August 1, 2015, it will not be covered by these benefits.

Want to learn more?

See all your card's built-in benefits at Discover.com/cardbenefits.

Just thought that someone may have thought they had certain coverages, but they no longer do.

This is ridiculous. This should be based on the charge date, not the trip date. But of course you signed a contract of adhesion so Disco can do whatever they want. Imagine if you had gotten this news one day before sailing when it would be too late to get insurance elsewhere.

I've worked in the debt collection industry since the early 1990s and I see the worst side of these credit card companies. The only card I carry is AMEX (charge, no credit). They aren't the least expensive nor do they have the best rewards program, but they are clear and honest in what they provide. They also treat their own vendors well, unlike the others who treat their vendors even worse than their debtors.

I hate Amex. I will never use them again.

Yeah, that stinks. I found out about it a few weeks ago when I was pricing travel insurance for our upcoming cruise. I was deciding whether to get medical evacuation only or a comprehensive plan and I went to the Discover Card site because I couldn't remember if the benefits were primary or secondary. I've never used the Discover Card coverage; the one time we had a claim we also had comprehensive travel insurance, but I was always glad it was there.

Yesterday, I learned was that my Visa Signature card includes these benefits, though it was like pulling teeth to find it on their web site. Guess which card I'll use from now on?
