Is this the future of cruising? "Fake" ports that all look the same. Passengers that never set foot in the actual reality of the country they're visiting?

Which itinerary and leaving from which port go to Amber Cove? I can't seem to find it on Carnival's website.

There are many excursions available that will allow you to see the surrounding area. I’ve been on about 10 cruises, I don’t remember ever stepping off the ship into a native environment, there’s always some kind of commercialized area.

I wonder how they decide between the ship making port in Amber Cove or La Romana. I'm on the Breeze over Thanksgiving and I would so much rather stop at Amber Cove. We're not planning on leaving the ship in the DR.

The waterpark looks exciting! Will be there next Nov on the Vista! We will have a 17month old that won't likely be potty trained by then, I am hoping they will allow a toddler with swim diapers in the kid splash areas.

True you can.....and I always have with the exception of Mahogany Bay. Question is....is DR safe? I know the area near MB they basically advise not to venture off property unless on an official excursion.

We will be stopping there on the Valor in May. I think I will do a sightseeing tour to Puerta Plata.

Passengers have the option of doing whatever they want. We were in Grand Turk last week and spent the majority of time there outside of the gated area. We took an ATV tour and got a chance to see the whole island. Then we came back and enjoyed the port area. There are always excursions and things to do if you choose.

My family and I are so interested in the cabana bungalo style rooms to rent... anyone know how to get one? I don't see it listed under excursions.

We'll be there in December on the Valor. Looks great! I love these upgraded Carnival ports. Nothing stopping anyone from leaving for the day. Love coming back after a long day out and having a beer near the ship while the wife looks at the shops. Carnival really does a nice job with these, and they are a nice upgrade on the island.

I've vacationed in Puerto Plata once and will never step foot there, nor will I support the local economy. Everything was rundown and dirty, beaches weren't great, and most importantly just about EVERYONE will try to scam you. And the majority of people were absolutely rude with no manners!

 

Will never step foot on Amber Cove or Dominican Republic for that matter again. There's so many other countries with honest, friendly, hard working people that deserve much better and that's who I'll support. Don't care how pretty the port looks.

Oh well, more beach chairs for us. hehehehe I highly doubt it's going to be that bad. Carnival Crop probably has a big say on how things are going to work in that area.

I have no problem with these new ports being developed, anything that adds some extra variety to the itineraries. As long as they don't stop going to other ports to drive more volume to the ports they own. I did see there was one cruise with Grand Turk, Amber Cove, and Half Moon Cay as the ports. I think an entire cruise of these ports would be a little much, but as others have stated you always have the option to leave the gated area and truly experience the real island anytime you want (except HMC of course, since its totally private island.)
