Princess@Sea app

I have been looking at the android app a bit.

It looks to me like -- if you want to use princess@sea messenger on your

phone -- you use the app to log in, and the the app redirects to the browser

and loads: <shipname>.princess.com/messages

Is this consistent with others' experience?

I had read that the IOS app simply redirected to the browser, but

it looks like the Android app does as well.

:p Actually all you have to do is make certain you are wifi connected (free) to the ship's wifi and simply enter <shipname>.princess.com on any of your browsers! To use the messenger function, you have to signup (we were on a back to back and I had to choose a new id for each portion) (I think it came back with a 7 character user-identify that I had to use to give to other users so that we could communicate via the messenger portion!)!

Actually the <shipname>.princess.com was useful in the INTERNET shop terminals as it was totally free and useful to check activities, shipboard account, etc.! Then you can select the Internet option to actually connect and start burning time.

I really don't see the point for the iOS/Android app?

Thank you for the reply.

Maybe the apps remember your login information, so you don't

have to keep entering it?

 All my browsers remember my logins when I bookmark them so again I see no point in an app!

For some browsers -- like chrome -- the stuff that is remembered

is in the cloud -- that way it's available across machines.

But, on a ship, you don't typically maintain an internet connection

to access this info.

:eek:Not likely!:p

I agree.

I don't think there have been many (any?) reports of the

princess Apps working 'well'; so it's a little suprising that

it works 'well' on the Apple Watch.

It will be interesting if Pam can report whether she received

new message notifications on the watch or not.

 Obviously, since the APP only invokes a browser application! I would not expect even the advanced android capabilities over iOS to function with any of the android smart watches either!:o

As wonderful as apple products may be to some, ironically, princess

messenger uses google cloud messaging.

it will be interesting if these apps use the GCM or APNS for notification because that would need the notification to goto the Google/Apple servers and then back to the intended user.

For example User A sends to User B

A->sends to server on ship ( or on princess hosted on land ) ->
then to Apple/Google servers -> user B

I dont see how they make it possible without internet minutes ( apps need to get to internet to get to Google/Apple servers ) usage by atleast one of the users ( B )

So my guess is that the apps work with a local server on ship & use local notification to alert the user of an incoming message.

User A sends a meesage -> message gets stored in the
server on ship, intended for User B ->
user B app keeps checking local server of any new messages ->
once found show an alert to the user.

This can lead to poor experience if the princess app gets backgrounded due to the user opening other apps. ( fits with the experience of some users here )

I will get on cruise later this month :):):) & share what i observe once i am back

Originally, I was very sure that princess was using GCM.

Even the name 'com.gcm.princess.messenger.apk'...

But, with this re-directing to an intranet webpage to see messages,

it could be something completely different.

I will be very interested in hearing about what you see on board.

  • 1 month later...

When on the Star the week before our large group used the messenger utility to keep in touch. The messages mostly got through and so the utility was useful. I use both an Apple iPod Touch and an Android phone, and was disappointed (as we all were) that no notification of any kind came through when a message was received. I thought it was interesting that star.princess.com remembered me from a previous sailing, and I logged into the same account.
