The Cathedral in Abidjan was wonderful and certainly worth a visit when we were last there (2000) but there has been a civil war there since then.

Dakar is a pretty grim, dirty and hot port to visit. The main points of interest are the slave pens on Goree Island (involving a ferry ride I believe) or the Pink Lake at Retba (which may or may not be pink depending on the time of the year). If you do not fancy a trip then take a ride on the shuttle into the centre of town and either a) do not get off b) take a short walk around the main square or c) take a short walk to the local market, but not on your own. There is also an enormous statue on the edge of the city called the African Renaissance Monument, it cost $27m and caused significant controvercy when it was unveiled in 2010.

If you get a chance in Ghana on the way to Tema visit the coffin builders, they make spectacular coffins in the shape of many things, often related to the deceased's job or role, such as a plane for a pilot.
