Venice Airport Info.

We just returned from a wonderful Mideastern Cruise (round trip from Venice) and thought I would provide some information as to what to expect when you arrive at the departure portion of the Venice Airport. Hope this is helpful. First of all, the departure area is extremely small, especially when there are a couple of cruise ships which have just embarked a several thousand passengers. You cannot check your luggage sooner than 2 hours before your flight, and there is basically no place to sit and wait if you happen to get there too early. You just stand around with the throngs of other passengers, waiting. The lines were very long both to check in and through security. After you get past the security section, the airport opens up with many shops, eating establishments, etc. Just be prepared for what to expect.

Agree! And the situation can be even worse if you have a very early flight. We once had an 8am International Flight out of Marco Polo so arrived at the airport around 5:30 in order to give ourselves more then enough time. What we found was that the check-in counters were not even open! By the time they opened up the counters it was after 6:30 and the line was huge. Marco Polo ranks up there as one of our least favorite airports in Europe.

Thanks for the heads up about not being able to check in more than 2 hours before your flight - we're looking at disembarking next summer at 8 am and looking at a flight leaving at 11:30 am - is that cutting it too close? We'll do early self-walkoff - how do you know when to get to the airport to account for standing in line to check your luggage but not be there more than 2 hours before departure?

Thanks - we've only flown internationally once and the Copenhagen Airport was great - now we're a bit worried.

Based on my experiences, 2 hrs is cutting it too close!

On our last trip we had a noon flight on Delta to JFK, midweek. Arrived at 9:35am and immediately got in line. By the time we got to the gate we only had 10-15 minutes to spare; just long enough to enjoy one last gelato.

The trip before that we arrived at 4pm for a 6pm flight to Spain .... by the time we got to the ticket counter they said we probably wouldn't make the flight. We ran; barely made it.

The ticket counters aren't staffed adequately. You stand in line forever and at the last minute they add a few more employees then the line moves quickly.

Thanks Mapleleaves! That's what I was afraid of, but was trying to get out of staying another night in Venice (we're doing 3 pre-cruise)

Why an extra night ? If you're planning to disembark at 8am, you have more than enough time .... the airport is only 15-20 minutes from the pier.
