lawyerchica86 Posted November 6, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 6, 2015 My husband and I are taking a cruise on the NCL Escape in two weeks. Since it's our first, what kind of extra charges can be expect once we're onboard? We already have the UBP and the SDP. We've also already pre-paid for the required gratituties. Thanks! Rare Hlitner Posted November 6, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 6, 2015 (edited) You control what you spend onboard, but NCL (and all mass market lines) do everything in their power to "encourage" you to spend lots of money :). And on NCL you have lots of dining choices....quite a few which involve extra fees. If you stick to only the free dining options or those covered by your package this will save you some real money. Also keep in mind that the Casino is there to enrich the cruise line as are other games like BINGO. And there is also shopping onboard, paying for communications (i.e. internet, cell phones, etc) which can be avoided. And finally there are the ports. You can quickly spend a lot of money buy booking cruise line excursions (always overpriced) so do your homework and consider doing your own thing in the ports. Just keep in mind that you should be in control and do not get caught-up in spending money on things you really do not want or need. NMLady Posted November 6, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 6, 2015 (edited) In addition to what Hank said, Except for the complimentary continental breakfast there will be a $7.95 room service fee per delivery for room service. There is a forum dedicated to all things NCL. You might want to read posts there, especially those dealing with the Escape. cb at sea Posted November 6, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 6, 2015 If you've got the drink and food packages and tips are done...then you'll really not have too much other expenses! Of course, bingo, gambling, shopping, photos, etc....can eat up a bunch of $$$....and excursions are probably the biggest expense! Get a guidebook and see what things you can do on your own...and there are MANY things that don't require excursions or guides!
Lerin Posted November 8, 2015 #5 Share Posted November 8, 2015 One thing to remember is all extra fees are clearly listed. If you don't want to pay a charge, then don't order that item/excursion/treat/drink...

bitsey66 Posted November 9, 2015 #7 Share Posted November 9, 2015 Another big thing (or maybe it's just my imagination, lol) TIPS!!! It seems every place we went, tips are "expected". I'm not talking pre paid gratuities on board (unless someone provided outstanding service then we tip extra to that individual) but taxis, buses, transportation to/from excursions, to/from port, porters, dining on shore, etc etc etc.... We even asked a little boy in Honduras where a certain shop was located, and instead of just telling us, he told us and then walked us there and stood by the entrance waiting! I think I spent more on "other tips" than onboard required gratuity
