Checking In

I'm getting ready to cruise on the QM2 with my partner who is total nervous nelly.

This mornings question is about checking in..

Is checking in like you do at the airport? I mean you check in online, print your boarding pass and once there go straight through security without dilli-dalling around at the front counter? Drop ya bags off, through security and your onboard?

Or is there a process we have to follow once we get there? We have a Duplex booked if that helps?

At this point in time the more information the better...

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

You print your E-tickets which you may or may not need to show.

You will be given a health form to complete when you arrive at the terminal and be directed to the Grills/priority queue.

You will have your passport swiped, photos taken and credit card details recorded. You will be given your cruise cards and directed through security.

Have a great trip

Great.

One of nervous nelly fears is that we will get to the terminal but our names won't be on the list.

Are we best to use the baggage labels to provided that we download of the VP? I'm yet to see these. They'll have our name and cabin number on I assume?

Were first time cruisers if you guys couldn't already tell..

I echo Host Hattie's post and add: You can rest assured that having booked and paid for Queens Grill accommodation your names will be on 'the list' and that you will be extremely well taken care of. Many of us who frequent this board would love to arrive at the terminal with our names on the 'duplex list'. Check-in and boarding can be a bit of a scrum as there can be thousands of people coming and going but before you know it you'll be on board and settling in. You definitely picked a great way to dip your feet into the world of cruising. Have fun and please let us know how it goes.

It's very much like checking in for a flight. There will be plenty of people to guide or assist you in the process. Everyone is very friendly and excited, too. Just enjoy the process.

Don't do like I did. Don't leave your boarding documents in a bag meant to be checked. I had to fish it out of the pile of baggage carts to retrieve all of my documents.

One thing that surprised us on our first boarding was we were expected to find our own way to our cabin. Given that you are in a duplex, you may get an escort. I'd rather find it on my own. In either case, look at the ship's schematics and make sure you have a general idea of the direction of your cabin. Once you have arrived, your butler will pop in to introduce himself. You bags may beat you to your cabin and will be on the bed for unpacking.

After you drop everything in your cabin, go to the Grills dining room and have a leisurely lunch. Poke around the ship while everyone else boards.

Tell Nervous Nelly to get excited. It's much better than nervous. It's going to be a great time.

You MUST use the labels which are either sent to you, or downloaded from the VP. We always put 2 on each bag as we've seen some get ripped off and cases have to then be reclaimed at the purser's desk.

Q1-Q4's get an escort once on board.

In you room will be a card with your restaurant table number. If in a duplex, you will allocated a table quite near the entrance and probably by the window, unless of course you have asked for a large table.

The QG restaurant will be open for lunch at 1:00pm so get there sharp in case you don't like the table and in which case, have a word with the Maitre d'.

Don't be afraid to ask the Maitre d' for any favourite meals of your choosing and it will normally be served the next day.

You are bound to love it.

You are in a Duplex stop worrying ! ;) just leave everything to the uniformed Bell Boy who will be hovering around the check-in desk and will escort both of you to your suite, where he will hand you over to your Butler !

I wish I was on your trip I'd have offered to carry your bags ....always wanted to have a peek into those Duplex Suites ;)

Have a wonderful voyage ... You do know that you've started at the top and not only that, cruising/ships can become addictive.

Your main luggage will be whisked away as soon as you arrive. It will likely get the same priority as you through check in with the luggage labels assigned.

I have been lucky enough to have had a quick tour of the central aft duplex. They are amazing. The walk in wardrobe was a big as my inside cabin. :)

Have a wondrous trip. We are all very jealous.

Go to the Cunard Roll Calls section at Cruise Critic. You will find a link to your ship. Follow it and there will be a Roll Call for your segment/trip/section. Ask specific questions on that thread about tours and other odd observations. These will be the your fellow passengers. Many of them have booked tours and will have all the advice you will require. It's a little more specific than this part of Cruise Critic. Have a great time. One thing is for certain, you will plenty of room:)

I went and got you the link to the QM2. She's a beauty. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=599

Any tips for embarking in Hong Kong?

I assume you intend to arrive at least one day before your cruise starts and stay overnight after arriving at the airport.

The airport is very new and the best way to get from there to Hong Kong central is by using "The Airport Express". It is fairly easy to find the railway station as it is in the airport and you obtain tickets from the machine. Handy to have Hong Kong Dollars for this. The train goes from the airport to Kowloon and then Central Hong Kong. It is modern and purpose built having big luggage racks so you can see your cases during the journey. Progress of the train is displayed by a series of many lights that illuminate on the wall display so you can see progress along the 24 minute journey. I stayed in Kowloon at the Ritz Carlton (lovely swimming pool on floor 118) which was handy as first stop is Kowloon and the hotel is within the station complex. Please note that English is widely used on signage.

To travel to the cruise terminal you simply get a taxi to "The Kai Tak Cruise Terminal"; taxi drivers should know where it is as it is on the site of the old airport. I tend to get my English speaking hotel people to manage taxi ordering, luggage portering and speaking to the driver and confirm with them they have told the taxi driver all you need him to know then tip the hotel guy. It is very straight forward booking in as there will be fewer passengers trying to embark there as you might otherwise typically find in most cruise terminals worldwide. The personnel will realise you are a cruise passenger and guide you appropriately.

When travelling in the Far East it makes sense to have everything printed out in English and the foreign language script. You can show this to people who will then be enabled to assist you failure to do this can lead to major problems.

Don't bet on that. I was handed a red card as a duplex resident at check in last year and when I got to the gangway I was told to find my own room. I asked several staff what to do with my special card and none of them had an answer.
