sctexan Posted January 25, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2016 Just wondering which would be better for balcony viewing for afternoon sailaways from St. Thomas and Tortola or which side is just simply more scenic? VideoTech Posted January 25, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) IMO, I'm not sure it matters. In St. Thomas, you will dock at Havensight, generally bow in towards the port, and that would put the harbor on the Port side of the ship. The view off the other side is just port buildings and houses on the hills above the port. It's been a while since I've been to Tortola, but the setup there is a long pier jutting out into the water. Which side the harbor will be on depends on whether the ship docks bow in or stern in. In either case, you'd have a view to either side, although you may be looking at another cruise ship on one side or the other. Both harbors are fairly small and wide, so when you leave the harbor you're out in open water almost instantly. cb at sea Posted January 26, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2016 (edited) Doesn't matter...the captain can change it up at any time. If you can't see what you want from your balcony...go to an open upper deck...360 views! All ports are in a harbor...so there are views everywhere! Rare Keith1010 Posted January 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 26, 2016 Either side is fine. Keith
Demonyte Posted January 26, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 26, 2016 In St. Thomas, you will dock at Havensight, generally bow in towards the port... It's not that simple, we've been there pretty much equally docked both ways. Since St Thomas is an US port, it is often preferred port for resupplying and maintenance they can not easily do on the turnaround day, and especially the latter will dictate the direction of the ship (last time there they did maintenance for the crew rescue rafts on port side so we were bow out because of that). Sonoran_cruiser Posted January 26, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 26, 2016 In Tortola we docked "aft in", on the right side of the pier (if you were standing on the very end of the pier, facing land). An Aida ship was on the other side, and another Aida ship was tendering to shore (pretty busy day). Does the Escape always dock this way, on this side? Who knows!
