Enough time in JFK to get bags and catch next flight?

We are arriving at 6:55 am on Hawaiian Airlines to JFK on April 20th. We will be flying to DCA after that but have not booked the ticket yet. There is a Delta Flight for a good price leaving at 9:30 am. Would this generally be enough time to get our bags and re-check them, then go through security again to catch the next flight? We have never been there before.

There aren't a lot of non-stop flights, and the others are mostly afternoon or evening. That long of a wait after flying from Hawaii doesn't sound nice.

Thanks for any input!

You should have enough time, since, I'm assuming you are domestic? It would be better to not have to switch terminals when you make your selection.

HA depart/arrive JFK at Terminal 5 and DL flights @ T3 or T4, with DCA typically on smaller regional/commuter jets. You will need to take the free AirTrain to transfer from T5 to T3 or T4, just check the digital signage to ride the short loop & not to Jamaica AirTrain stations (allow 15 to 20 minutes between terminals) Then, you will need to clear TSA/security - if you have PreCheck, it will make things a little easier & faster.

HA and DL have interline & baggage agreements so make sure you are ticketing both flight segments together (right) as your bags should be checked thru to DCA & transferred at JFK, without reclaiming them & dragging it thru the lower level, up the elevators to the AirTrain and down & thru to the check-in counters.

HA's pre/dawn arrivals @JFK are usually on-time and weather in April is generally good, delays at those hours are minimal to none for your long haul flights - but not always true for 9:30+ departure to DCA. The buzz word is "should" be fine (within MCT for domestic flights) and with a single ticketing, you are protected if you misconnect and get delayed, HA/DL will rebook you on a later flight ... and, you get extra time to enjoy a hot breakfast inside the terminal (somewhat pricey $$ as you would imagine)

If for whatever reasons - your ticketing is on separate bookings, I highly recommend have trip insurance - I understand you don't want to spend more than a few hours for an extended layover to hangout at JFK ( any lounge access privileges ?? or consider a one-day pass )

Mahalo !

At T5 it is a long walk (with moving walkways) to Air Train. If you interline your bags do not have to pick up anything from baggage claim DO NOT go down to the baggage claim level.

There is an exit out to the departure level that is close to the escalators/elevators to the walkway out to the parking garage (only one for T5) where Air Train is.

It would be two escalators to air train if coming from baggage claim, one elevator. Note elevator on the level to connect to Air Train the door opens on the opposite side you board into a hallway, just walk left to see the signs.

Also there are two Air Train tracks . You want to get on the Air Train that just goes to the terminals, runs clockwise with T4 would be your next stop. This train DOES NOT stop at Federal Circle (rental car, hotel shuttle).

The other track the trains go to the Parking Lots and LIRR Jamaica station via Federal Circle. If you get on the Air Train and the next stop is T7 just get off and cross over to the other side to go back. You would have to go to the end of the line for that Air Train and come back in Terminal number order to get to T4.

T4 B Concourse is huge, so if your gate is a high number be prepared for another walk with moving sidewalks.
